Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most costly burdensome chronic diseases of our time and is condition that is increasing in epidemic population in the whole world. According to Ayurveda Diabetes is of two types: Diabetes Mellitus- Insulin dependent Juvenile Diabetes (IDDM-Type I) in which the body is unable to produce insulin and Non Insulin Dependent Adult Onset Diabetes (NIDDM-Type II) in which the pancreas produces insulin, but it is insufficient for reducing the blood glucose to normal levels.

How do I know if my diabetes medicines are working?
Learn to test your blood glucose. Ask your doctor about the best testing tools for you and how often to test. After you test your blood glucose, write down your blood glucose test results. Then ask your doctor teacher if your diabetes medicines are working. A good blood glucose reading before meals is between 70 and 140 mg/dL.
Ask your doctor about how low or how high your blood glucose should get before you take action. For many people, blood glucose is too low below 70 mg/dL and too high above 240 mg/dL.
One other number to know is the result of a blood test your doctor does called the A1C. It shows your blood glucose control during the past 2 to 3 months. For most people, the target for A1C is less than 7 percent.

There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, which was previously called insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile-onset diabetes, accounts for about 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, which was called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes, accounts for the remaining 90%. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that only pregnant women get. If not treated, it can cause problems for both the baby and the mother. Gestational diabetes develops in 2% to 5% of all pregnancies, but usually disappears when the pregnancy is over.
Diabetes is a serious disease and phrases such as “a touch of diabetes” or “your blood sugar is a little high” tend to dismiss the fact that diabetes is a major killer of Americans. In addition to the lives that are lost, diabetes has a tremendous economic impact in the United States. The National Diabetes Education Program estimates the cost of diabetes in 2002 was $132 billion. Of this amount, $92 billion was due to direct medical costs and $40 billion due to indirect costs such as lost workdays, restricted activity, and disability due to diabetes. The average medical expenditure for a person with diabetes was $13,243, or 5.2 times greater than the cost for a person without diabetes. In addition, 11 percent of national health care expenditures went to diabetes care.
In response to this growing health burden of diabetes, the diabetes community has three choices: prevent diabetes; cure diabetes; and improve the quality of care of people with diabetes to prevent devastating complications. All three approaches are being actively pursued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Many government agencies, at all levels, are involved in educational campaigns in an attempt to prevent diabetes, especially type 2. Several approaches to “cure” diabetes are also being pursued: pancreas transplantation, islet cell transplantation (islet cells in the pancreas produce insulin), the development of an artificial pancreas, and genetic manipulation where fat or muscle cells that do not normally make insulin have a human insulin gene inserted and are then transplanted into people with type 1 diabetes.
While there is yet no cure for diabetes, healthy eating, physical activity, and insulin injections are the basic therapies for type 1 diabetes. For those with type 2 diabetes, treatment includes healthy eating, physical activity, and blood glucose testing. Many people with type 2 may require oral medication to control their glucose levels. People with diabetes must take personal responsibility for their day-to-day care, and keep blood glucose levels from going too low or too high. The key to living a long and healthy life with diabetes is to learn about the disease, exercise daily, follow a diabetes food plan (right portions of healthy foods, less salt and fat), stop smoking, take prescribed medications, get routine medical care, brush your teeth and floss every day, monitor your blood glucose the way the doctor tells you to and remain positive. Using the correct routines, thousands of people with diabetes have lived long, happy and productive lives.

ANGER: The next consequent feeling I had was anger. The moment I was set in the disease I was crazy and gone mad. Mad at my doctor, mad at God, mad on everything for making my simple life so difficult. Mad on my new born disease for making my life miserable and exaggerating me.

WITHDRAWAL: Right from the begging I was very fun loving guy. The retail food business sort of demands that, when I got to know my new disease I could see how slowly I began to withdrew and became more down to earth. My pleasing personality slowly started changing as well. I became more serious and less fun loving.

DEPRESSION: There were times when I became totally depressed with my newly found disease. Each and every new changes I made for my new diet plan, the long list of medications for the complication that are arising, the never ending war of weight loss; the stress of knowing the complications that can be develop on me; the list goes on.

These were the major feelings I experienced, there are other also.

The most important thing is to have a great support team surrounding you and your family, spouse, doctor, nutritionist, etc. all those who can provide the feeling you will need to cope with this disease. There are support groups at most hospitals that may help too.

The above mentioned situation alongwith the continuos growing rate in diabetes hospitalizations which increased 9 per cent in the past five years to 23,725 during 2004, make them create a new health program to reduce health care costs through a initiative of health coaches.

According to a study from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, hospitalizations generated more than $673 million in hospital charges last year alone, although 40 per cent of these are paid by health plans.

The main idea of this new iniciative is to lower the health care costs associated with employees with diabetes and to keep them out of the hospital, but on the job at same time.

This iniciative will start in January, and will provide “health coaches” to 4,200 diabetic employees at 10 companies in the region, under a program that will be launched by the Pittsburgh Business Group on Health, a coalition that includes human resources and benefits executives from 62 area companies.

In the new program, employees who volunteer to participate will have counseling sessions with pharmacists about using diabetic medications. Health coaches will check patients are getting the tests needed to monitor their condition and are following recommendations about diet and exercise.

Everything under the sun has its causes. Our lives are nothing but cycles of never-ending causes reaching out for yet another and another cause. Viewed from that perspective, everything is a cause for something else. Nothing is neutral.
We often pay more attention to some causes and less to others, especially in connection with causes that give us pain or pleasure. The more desirable or undesirable causes in the long causative chains are often called symptoms of a given condition, with the implicit understanding that they merely reflect other and more deeply seated underlying causes. For, in the context of things, every symptom is always associated with long chains of prior causes.
Dealing with diseases, we are often tempted to eliminate symptoms of the disease first. To get rid of symptoms, we can either (1) remove (or transmute) their causes (which will break or transform the causative chain), or (2) remove the symptoms, while leaving their causes undisturbed. In the second case, however, the chances are that the symptoms will soon come back in one form or another.
Likewise, when dealing with desirable things, such as external signs or symptoms of wealth (such as nice clothes or fancy cars) we can either (1) build the foundation of wealth that will give rise to such symptoms, or (2) attempt to pursue the symptoms first without much thought of sustaining them by such foundation. We can also identify the (desirable) symptoms of good health to realize that we cannot acquire them directly, without building a strong underlying foundation first.
The experience teaches that a mere elimination of symptoms is short-lived, as the underlying causes will soon give birth to new symptoms. Similarly, going after desirable symptoms without first building the underlying foundation will not sustain such symptoms for a long time. Based on experience, we are often reminded to postpone gratification of our enjoyment, until such underlying foundation (the underlying cause) has been well established. This would seem to be the only way to gain more lasting health.
Strangely, when it really matters, we tend to ignore the laws of cause and effect while running our lives. Take wars, for instance. We talk a lot about war atrocities, quickly passing around blame among warring nations, their governments, soldiers or politicians. We even go so far as making it illegal to wage wars, as we naively did it in the 1920’s. But the wars seem to persist for they are nothing but symptoms of underlying conditions. We should be looking for the cause of wars rather than attempting to ban war, which is a symptom. Instead of asking who “started” and engaged in a war, why not ask what induced it? With that approach we might succeed in identifying the underlying causes and gain insights on how to prevent new wars and how to resolve undergoing military conflicts.
Here is the difference between the two approaches: considering merely the symptoms appears childish and shortsighted. It is like a teenager going after the most fashionable and expensive sneakers to demonstrate how popular or secure he is. Or like a petty thief who commits theft to become rich quickly. Or, like a “doctor” who, upon seeing a symptom of a disease, recommends surgery to remove it. The approach is sophomoric and puerile. If we go after and try to remove the undesirable symptoms only, we can be sure that the symptoms will return again and again, sometimes in different, more degenerated forms.
Penetrating into causes of things, on the other hand, elevates our inquiry to the level of a true science. It is through this kind of inquiry that we can classify and then predict causes and effects of things. In the case of genuine medicine, we focus our inquiry on the causes of health and illness. When done properly, we should be able to classify, predict and heal all diseases.
All of this may seem fair enough. Why is it then that we have been missing on the identification of true causes of diseases (diabetes being just one of many) for so long? It is because we look at the world from a dualistic point of view. By adopting such an outlook, we see diabetes as something separate from us, as a problem to be solved or gotten rid of, or waged war against. We see it as “something” out there and separate that somehow happened to the poor “us.” Can’t we yet see the problem?
Luckily for us, nature provides us with many clues to solve any riddle or heal any disease. All we need to do is look carefully at the cycle of changes always happening naturally around us. Let us look at the night as it slumbers its way into the new day, or the day, as it runs its course to always make it for its rendezvous with the night. Not much duality there: the day and the night reflecting each other in perfect unity!
Continuing our study, we will soon notice that the pattern of changes repeats over and over in nature. We call the principles of such repeated change “Yin and Yang,” where the forces of Yin tend to expand only to be confined by the restricting forces of Yang, which then gives way to the expansion of Yin, and on and on, forever. Yet, there is no war, always unity.
Upon more observation of the world of Yin and Yang, we will have a better and deeper understanding of the causes of all things. We will then be able to understand the causes of every disease. We will be healed!

Diabetes is having a devastating effect on the African American community. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in African Americans and their death rates are twenty seven percent higher than whites.
Over 2.8 million African Americans have diabetes and one third of them don’t know they have the disease. In addition, twenty five percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 – 74 have diabetes and one in four African American women, over the age of 55, have been diagnosed with the disease
The cause of diabetes is a mystery, but researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play roles in who will develop the disease.
Heredity
Researchers believe that African Americans and African Immigrants are predisposed to developing diabetes. Research suggests that African Americans and recent African immigrants have inherited a “thrifty gene” from their African ancestors.
This gene may have enabled Africans to use food energy more efficiently during cycles of feast and famine. Now, with fewer cycles of feast and famine, this gene may make weight control more difficult for African Americans and African Immigrants.
This genetic predisposition, coupled with impaired glucose tolerance, is often associated with the genetic tendency toward high blood pressure. People with impaired glucose tolerance have higher than normal blood glucose levels and are at a higher risk for developing diabetes.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes, commonly know as “sugar diabetes”, is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly produce or use insulin. Insulin is needed by the body to process sugar, starches and other foods into energy. Diabetes is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure; diabetes is a serious disease and should not be ignored.
Diabetics often suffer from low glucose levels (sugar) in their blood. Low blood sugar levels can make you disorientated, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have headaches, have sudden mood swings, have difficulty paying attention, or have tingling sensations around the mouth.
Types of Diabetes
Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type II diabetes. Pre-diabetes can cause damage to the heart and circulatory system, but pre-diabetes can often be controlled by controlling blood glucose levels. By controlling pre-diabetes you can often prevent or delay the onset of Type II diabetes.
Type I or juvenile-onset diabetes usually strikes people under the age of 20, but can strike at any age. Five to ten percent of African Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes are diagnosed with this type of the disease. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces little or no insulin and this type of diabetes must be treated with daily insulin injections.
Type II or adult onset diabetes is responsible for ninety to ninety-five percent of diagnosed diabetes cases in African Americans. Type II results from a condition where the body fails to properly use insulin. According to the American Diabetes Association, “Type II is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don’t exercise and who have cholesterol problems.” In the early stages it can often be controlled with lifestyle changes, but in the later stages diabetic pills or insulin injections are often needed.
Pregnancy related diabetes or gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes is often associated with high glucose blood levels or hyperglycemia. Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women. The disease usually goes away after delivery, but women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life.
Symptoms of Diabetes
The most common symptoms of diabetes include:
excessive urination including frequent trips to the bathroom
increased thirst
increased appetite
blurred vision
unusual weight loss
increased fatigue
irritability
Complications from Diabetes
Diabetes can lead to many disabling and life threatening complications. Strokes, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and amputations are common complications that effect African Americans who have diabetes
Kidney Disease
“Diabetes is the second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans, accounting for about thirty percent of the new cases each year,” says the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Up to twenty-one percent of people who develop diabetes will develop kidney disease.
Amputations
Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the United States. More than sixty percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in America occur among people with diabetes and African Americans are almost three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated due to diabetes than whites. According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 82,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed among people with diabetes in 2001.
Blindness
African Americans are twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness. Diabetics can develop a condition called “Diabetic Retinopathy”, a disease affecting the blood vessels of the eye, which can lead to impaired vision and blindness. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people from 20 – 74 years of age and up to 24,000 people loose their sight each year because of diabetes.
Heart Disease
People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to develop heart disease as people who don’t have diabetes. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is more common in diabetics and can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and poor circulation throughout the body.
Diabetes Risk Factors
You have a greater risk for developing diabetes if you have any of the following:
Obesity
Family history of diabetes
Pre-diabetes
Low physical activity
Age greater than 45 years
High blood pressure
High blood levels of triglycerides
HDL cholesterol of less than 35
Previous diabetes during pregnancy or baby weighing more than 9 pounds
Diabetes has had a devastating effect on the African American community; it is the fifth leading cause of death and second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans.
African Americans suffer from complications from diabetes at a much higher rate than the rest of the population. African Americans are three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated because of diabetes and twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness.
