The State Of Georgia’s Health Insurance

532

Summary:

Although healthcare insurance is very basic, there are around 1.7 million residents in the state of Georgia who go about their day without the benefit of any healthcare insurance of some form. The figure is quite alarming, considering that there are over 8 million people in that state if we go by the latest census figures. This only means that an estimated 21% of the population is uninsured (as opposed to uninsurable).

The State Of Georgia’s Health Insurance

Although healthcare insurance is very basic, there are around 1.7 million residents in the state of Georgia who go about their day without the benefit of any healthcare insurance of some form. The figure is quite alarming, considering that there are over 8 million people in that state if we go by the latest census figures. This only means that an estimated 21% of the population is uninsured (as opposed to uninsurable). Of the uninsured, 71% are adults who are earning income, or are dependents of income earning adults.

Georgia’s states officials have admitted that the level of the uninsured in the population has hit crisis level. The problem actually stems from the prohibitive healthcare costs in that state. Thankfully, there are already proposed legislations which, when approved, would make healthcare more accessible to the uninsured.

Lt. Governor Casey Cagle announced on January 31, 2008 the introduction of the Georgia Health Marketplace and the Healthcare Safety Net, which are, at the very basic healthcare initiatives by the state’s legislature.

Once these are approved, the Georgia Health Marketplace and the Healthcare Safety Net is seen to significantly cut the cost of Atlanta health insurance or, more precisely, Atlanta’s healthcare, by creating simple free-market system. Currently, Georgians have to put up with high healthcare costs and very few options being available. While there is no lack of health insurance carriers offering the whole range of health insurance programs, very few offer affordable HMO or PPO programs which are that affordable.

Under Healthcare Safety Net program, patients with non-emergency symptoms are taken to community-based clinics managed by volunteers instead of hospital emergency rooms. Under the program, communities can work at establishing of a Safety Net Clinic by applying for a $30,000 partnership planning grant. The grant can be used to build facilities. Existing clinics that serve indigent patients may apply for an implementation grant of up to $150,000 annually, with a year’s renewal option of $50,000, to run the clinic.

The Georgia Health Marketplace (GHM) is an online clearing house Georgians can check information on health insurance, compare health insurance products offered by different insurers, and buy healthcare plans.

The GHM represents the different healthcare plan providers, healthcare professional groups, and state-subsidized healthcare plans. The GHM should make it easier for individuals and small businesses to access information and buy products. Education is the key importance of GHM, and encouraging people to get themselves insured.

There is certainly no lack of healthcare providers and insurance agents in Georgia. Most of them you can find by doing only a Google search. The ideal health insurance plan should address the long term healthcare of Georgia’s residents, and to help them with the cost of sickness and accidents.

Of all the known health insurance programs, the most accessible, for employed people at least, are HMO plans. Precisely because of the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973, employers with 25 full-time employees in their payroll to offer HMO or healthcare options to employees. If you feel that you can’t afford to pay for a healthcare policy out from your own pocket, you can consider being employed by a big company.

The Startling Statistics On Road Rage

article:

* A recent Gallup poll reported that motorists were more worried about road rage (42%) than about drunk driving (35%). – NY Times
* The Mizell Report, commissioned by AAA, uncovered 10,037 crashes caused by violent aggressive driving between January 1, 1990 and August 31, 1996. At least 218 men, women and children were killed as a result of these incidents and another 12,610 were injured. The problem is national in scope, not jut a phenomenon of congested urban areas.
* Aggressive driving may be a factor in 50% of auto crashes, based on the Washington Beltway Study. Source: Analysis of the Capital Beltway Crash Problem, U.S. DOT, March 1996.
* The problem is getting worse according to the AAA. There is a compound growth rate of 7%.
The Movie, ANGER MANAGEMENT, has a novel technique for solving road rage and a sense of time urgency in traffic.
Dave Buznik, a soft-spoken businessman played by Adam Sandler, is ordered to undergo anger management therapy by Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson) an unorthodox psychologist.
While Buddy is riding with Dave to work, Dave becomes increasingly anxious and upset about being late. Buddy (Nicholson) reaches over and pulls up the emergency brake in New York rush hour traffic, then takes the keys out of the ignition.
Buddy refuses to return the keys to Dave until they sing a few verses of “I Feel Pretty” from WEST SIDE STORY: https://petinstead.com/westsidestory/site/level2/lyrics/pretty.html
They sing while New Yorkers drive around them cursing, yelling and making rude gestures.
This illustrates that you can DO things to change your mood. Take action. Drive slower. Sing. Distraction is one of the best tools to change your angry mood.
I may never be able to have a good road rage again, just thinking of those two singing “I FEEL PRETTY” with the full chorus and orchestra coming up in the background…it’s going to be hard even in Houston traffic where armed “red necks” in pickup trucks are ready to shoot you for cutting in front of them.
This summer I am armed with the lyrics and the tape of WEST SIDE STORY queued up and ready to sing to those hot and bothered red necks when it is 100 degrees and the humidity is 98%. I can hardly wait.

I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity
Any girl who isn’t me tonight.
(85% of Road Ragers are men)

I feel charming,
Oh, so charming
It’s alarming how charming I feel!
And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I’m real.

Etc.

article:

It’s 11:45 pm. It’s time for a journey. Perhaps you’ve begun this journey several hours earlier. Perhaps you won’t begin for several more hours. No matter. You’ve undertaken this journey an uncountable number of times in your life, and know the path well. But it’s time to take with fresh eyes. To take it stage by stage, and to understand the science behind the mystery.
Are you ready? Let’s begin.
Stage One: This is the beginning of sleep, as you lie in your bed, head on soft pillows and comfortable blankets pulled up around your chin. At this point, you’re easily awakened, by loud noises, flashing lights, or other distractions. Your eyelids flutter, and your heart rate and breathing begins to slow as you begin to drift in and out of sleep.
After about 10 minutes, you might have a hypnic jerk- the sudden feeling of falling that wakes you up, but soon you’ll drift into the second stage.
Stage Two: Light sleep: Eye movements stop, heart rate slows. Your body temperature drops, and brain waves slow down as you officially fall asleep. Most of the night, 45% is spent in this stage.
Think of stage two as good nap; you’re asleep, and won’t be aware of most distractions, but you can still get up easily. You feel refreshed, energized after a good nap. But your body needs more sleep than just naps, and so you then fall into deep sleep.
Stage Three: This is deep sleep. You don’t move at all; no eye movements, no muscle movements, nothing. Your brain produces mostly delta waves: big, slow brain waves, in sharp contrast to the fast, jagged waves your produce when awake. If all goes according to plan, you will soon move to stage four.
Stage Four: Congratulations; you’ve made it to the last stage of sleep. It’s taken over an hour to get here, but you made it. You’re fast, fast asleep. Be careful though, this is the point where some children wet the bed, or have night terrors.
You can be woken up, but you’ll be groggy and slow. If you wake up at this point, you’ll likely hit the snooze button once or twice, vigorously rub your eyes and drink several cups of coffee.
Now what? If stage four is the last stage, what happens next? Well, stage four is hardly then end of your journey. You’ll backtrack a little, first to stage three, and then to stage two, but then something miraculous happens. After revisiting stage two, you make the jump to the best part of the journey: dreaming.
REM Sleep: This is where dreams take place. Travel the world, the universe. Take flight and soar above the trees. Fall in love again and speak to long lost friends and relatives. Anything is possible.
Breathing increases, your eyes flutter about, giving this stage its name: Rapid Eye Movement. Brain activity increases dramatically, close to the level of when you’re awake. Men develop erections.
Your brain blocks singles to your body, paralyzing your muscles, done to prevent you from acting on your dreams. However, this can have one of two consequences. One is that the muscle paralysis works too well, as is the case with sleep paralysis. Or, the paralysis might not work at all, and you end up sleep walking.
Now, after 8 hours and 5 cycles, it’s 8 am, and time to end your wondrous journey. It has given you a new lease on life; feeling energized and rested. Go now. Go now and seize the day. Make the most out of life, and come home each night feeling satisfied, eager to began another incredible journey.

The South Beach Diet

article:

Created by respected cardiologist Dr Arthur Agatston, the South Beach Diet is generally regarded as both effective and safe. Unlike most ‘fad’ diets, the South Beach Diet aims to modify your lifestyle slightly, in order to get you eating the right fats and carbohydrates, while actually enjoying it – this of course means you will be able to stick to it with less trouble than other diets! This is, of course the main reason why we here at https://petinstead.com/supadiet like it so much. A cardinal point of Dr Agatston’s theories is that eating ‘bad’ fats and carbohydrates actually makes you hungrier, and so you eat more. Proponents of the South Beach Diet claim it is entirely possible to lose between 8 and 14 pounds in just 2 weeks – a rate of weight loss that would usually be regarded as ‘dangerous crash dieting’.
The South Beach Diet is composed of 3 ‘phases’, the first 2 are for a limited timespan, the third is for the rest of your life. It doesn’t really rely on calorie counting, or portion control as such, more on creating a sensible eating schedule you can stick to. You won’t feel deprived, or constantly hungry, and the meals you eat will be full size enjoyable ones, not mung-bean snacks or some such nonsense. You will even be able to eat chocolate cake if you really want to! The meals you create will be of good variety, so not only will the South Beach Diet stop you feeling hungry, you won’t even get bored with the menu! Couple this with the tendency to see amazing results in a short timespan, and you can begin to see why the South beach Diet is so popular.
Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet is the strictest phase, and lasts only 2 weeks. Portion sizes are normal, but you have to restrich carbohydrates. Lean meats (chicken, turkey, fish) are emphasised, and you can eat both low-glycemic-index vegetables and low fat cheese, nuts and eggs. In this phase, you can shed up to 2 stones of weight, depending on your starting size. Typically, a South Beach Dieter on phase 1 will eat ordinary foodstuffs like chicken, beef, turkey or fish, with lots of vegetables, eggs, cheese, nuts, and garden salads. A salad dressing of 100% olive oil can also be used. For these first 2 weeks, you eat 3 well balanced meals a day, and the best part is you can eat until your hunger is satisfied. Honestly, it really IS part of the diet! (Dr Agatston believes that you can’t become healthy by depriving your body of food).
In phase 1 you can also eat a snack for elevenses, and another one in the mid afternoon. The interesting point here is that you really do need to eat these snacks, or the whole diet will be compromised. Eating the snacks helps to keep your appetite under control, and you won’t want to eat so much at the main meals – clever, isn’t it?! Unlike other diets, coffee and tea are ok in this phase, and of course you must be sure to drink lots of fresh water.
The bad news is that there are certain foods you have to steer clear of (although its only for the first 2 weeks) – cut out all bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, fruit, candy, cake, cookies, ice cream, or sugar. Also banned are beer and all other kinds of alcohol. Sounds tough? It’s only for 2 weeks! A tiny price to pay for reaching your ideal weight, and a life of health! For a list of South Beach Diet ‘Good’ Foods and ‘Bad’ foods, consult https://petinstead.com/supadiet.
Now we move on to Phase 2. The good news about this phase is that you can start to re-introduce some of the ‘banned’ foods, while still losing between 1 and 2 pounds per week. You continue this phase until you reach your target weight – the weight you ideal want to be at.
This phase lasts as long as it takes you to lose your ideal weight, so the duration depends on you – where you are starting from, how well you follow the diet, and how your body reacts. You should be entering this phase in a good frame of mind – after all, you should already be up to 14 pounds lighter! You may also find that your old cravings for unhealthy food have subsided, or reduced considerably, making it much easier in this phase. So what are the keys to this phase? Surprisingly, it’s NOT about eating less, its about cutting out those foods that start cravings and store body fat in the first place. You CAN add some ‘goodies’ back in, but in moderation. You can have chocolate cake, but don’t eat it every day. Make it a treat, as it should be. Weight loss in this phase tends to be between 1 and 2 pounds a week – the maximum doctors recommend to maintain health, and keep the weight off.
After that, you move on to Phase 3, which is the maintenance phase, and lasts for ever – you maintain your ideal weight while eating a healthy and balanced diet. If weight begins to rise again, you return to Phase 1 and repeat. You should have changed your entire outlook on food by now, and want to eat a natural healthy diet without having to use any willpower at all. You will feel healthier, and will be at less risk of weight-related illnesses, such as heart problems, and diabetes.

The Sound Of Silence And The Agony Of Sleeplessness

486

Summary:

The article is about the uses, effects, and benefits of using sleeping pills. The article also identifies the two types of sleeping aids, namely: the prescription pill and the over-the-counter sleeping aid. The article also provides some tips on the safe use of the said medication.

Most people use sleeping pills as a drug to relieve stress and anxiety, muscle tension, and insomnia. A sleeping pill is a prescription medication that helps a person fall asleep or at least remain asleep. There are two categories of sleeping aids sold in the U.S today: prescription and over-the-counter sleeping pills. The prescription sleeping pills contains an active ingredient called Benzodiazepines and diazepam. Over-the-counter-sleeping pills can be bought without prescription and it contains antihistamines.

Sleeping pills have been around for centuries. The earliest form of sleeping aids were the herbal potions and the opiate laudanum. Barbiturates were later introduced in the early 1900’s and this type of drug actually had 25,000 known compounds. However, barbiturates were eventually regulated due to its very addictive effects. Other sleeping pills being marketed today are known as sedatives, muscle relaxants, and nerve pills. These medications are often used for relief of depression, anxiety or those who have difficulties in sleeping. Difficulty in sleeping is caused by stress factors in life like the loss of a job, early retirement, the loss of loved ones, and financial problems.

Listed below are some of the known side-effects of sleeping pills:

drowsiness
lack of concentration
confusion
irritability
anxious
headache
nausea
constipation
blurred vision
dry mouth and throat

Other concerns related to the use of both over-the-counter and prescription sleeping pills also include:

drug dependence
drug tolerance
interactions with other drugs
rebound insomnia
withdrawal symptoms

Even if there have been advances in terms of the manufacturing of sleeping pills, misuse can still lead to cases of sleeping pill overdose.

There are actually alternatives to the use of sleeping pills and tranquillizers. If you think that taking sleeping pills is not for you, these healthy and non-drug alternatives might just help you deal with your sleeping problems:

Drink warm milk
Take a hot water bath before you go to bed
Make your bed more comfortable
Avoid coffee, soft drinks and tea after 5 pm
Don’t drink alcohol in the evening—it can keep you awake

However, if you really must use prescription sleeping pills, please make sure to follow these safety guidelines:

1.Do not take the sleeping pills when you are stressed out or have certain anxieties. Don’t use it as an instant cure for your depression, loneliness, and other emotional problems.
2.Know your medication, how often you should take it , how long and if its safe to use it even if one is taking alcohol.
3.Do not keep on taking the medication if you find it that is not suitable for you.
4.Check with your doctor when you stop taking sleeping pills or tranquillizers.
5.Never share nor borrow medication.

The main purpose of taking sleeping aids or medications that induce sleep is to provide you some temporary relief from insomnia. It is not the long-term solution to sleeping problems. The resolution of your anxieties and other problems is the best sleep inducer you can take.

The Solution To Stop Smoking

From loads of the well known methods on how to quit smoking, I will share with you the biggest discovery that will make you feel commanding enough to begin the course of becoming a nonsmoker. This unearthing will power you up day after day. You will enjoy the process and finally experience how easy life can be as a nonsmoker.

Let’s see an example: If you have ever tried to quit smoking in the past, what consequences caused you to smoke again? Think and observe the details of your brain. 15 minutes after “the last cigarette” you say to yourself, “I can do this.” After 2 hours you say, “I don’t know what’s going on; should I feel something?” After 2 1/2 hours you say, “What will I do now?” “Should I eat something?” “I have to do something, maybe just this one last cigarette.” Or you say, “Maybe I’m not prepared as I should be… Maybe God Himself should come and personally tell me directly in my face that now is the time?” Well maybe you will see Him, and maybe you are the one that is departing to visit Him. Rest guaranteed that this is a normal way of thinking. Some people have been “trying to quit” for decades and they are a testament that discontinuing is hard.

Well here is the innovation: It is rigid for every smoker quit because they are constantly thinking about smoking. After they “decide” to stop, all sorts of smoking related thoughts arise that they try to overcome, to beat somehow. When they not succeed they end up lighting cigarette again. If you want to quit you don’t need a 7 day or 21 day program. You need to start thinking as non-smokers do. Do they think about smoking? NO. All you have to do is not get involved in your personal discussion with yourself. When you notice that your brilliant brain start doing its job (thinking), you, in response, start doing your job and immediately change the focus. Simply change the subject. Thinking like a non-smoker is the only way to become a non-smoker.

The other self-help methods do have some helpful tips. However, if you start counting how many years, months, and days and hours you are free from nicotine, I assure you that there will come a time in your life when you will stop counting and start smoking again. The cure is to think and feel like a non-smoker.

article:

The overweight and obesity epidemic is a worldwide problem. There are no official statistics for spending on diet products, but estimates vary from $40 to $100 billion in the US alone, much of that on scams and fad diets that promise the impossible.
Research shows that 95% of people who have lost weight find that they regain it back when they return to their normal eating habits.
According to the Center for Disease Control’s Chronic Disease Center, in 1991 in the United States, only four states had an obesity prevalence of 15 percent to 19 percent. In 2003, 15 states had an obesity prevalence of 15 to 19 percent, 31 states had an obesity prevalence of 20 to 24 percent, and four states had a prevalence of 25 percent or more.
Major medical problems associated with obesity include gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and osteoarthritis.
If that isn’t incentive enough to lose that excess weight statistics show that overweight people are usually given lower paying jobs, get lower salaries, receive little in raises, and are, as a whole, looked down upon by 40 percent of fellow employees and employers.
In 2002 The American Heart Association reported that more than 10 percent of US children ages 2 to 5 are overweight. That is up from 7 percent in 1994. The situation is probably even worse now, said Dr. Robert H. Eckel, president-elect of the heart association and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado.
The obesity problem among children has increased with school-age children as well. Four million children ages 6 to 11 and 5.3 million in age group 12 to 19 have increased by 75 percent from 1991.
Food habits adopted in childhood can be hard to change. As a result hypertension and high cholesterol leading to heart disease, strokes, and diabetes are going to become the nations top health problem with people of all ages within 10 to 30 years. These are ailments that usually afflict the middle age to elderly population. More than a million new cases of diabetes are already being diagnosed each year, says the American Diabetic Association.
Nearly 30 percent of American adults are overweight and another 30 percent are obese, according to University of Minnesota researchers. Obesity is usually described as a weight 20 percent greater than the persons desirable weight.
A study by the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle revealed that 60% of overweight women, and 70% of obese women, are likely to become pregnant while taking the pill. The researchers suggest that a higher metabolism is the reason, causing the medication to be effective for a shorter length of time. Or, that the drug interacts with the body’s hormones in a way that the drug becomes trapped in the body fat instead of circulating in the bloodstream.
Studies with obese pregnant women show they are 50% more likely to die during pregnancy than those of normal weight. Complications such as miscarriage, gestational diabetes, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, pre-term labor, and stillbirth are also more common. Preliminary evidence shows that babies are also adversely affected, and are more likely to be obese themselves in later life.
Fast foods: Studies show that people who frequent fast food outlets twice a week or more gained 36 pounds over the course of 15 years compared to 26 pounds for those that frequented them once a week or less.
A major factor for the obesity crisis is a sedentary lifestyle, not enough exercise, and the eating of high calorie fast foods in place of nutritious natural food products.
Fast food is designed to promote consumption of the maximum number of calories in the minimum amount of time. This upsets the body’s normal metabolism. One solution is to eat smaller, more nutritious, meals more frequently throughout the day.
Physical activity reduces the effects of being overweight, but healthy eating habits have to be followed to prevent disease associated with poor nutrition according to an expert of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.
The new diet guidelines set by the Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is basically a balanced diet and good old fashioned exercise. They stress more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and limit fats, sugar, alcohol, and salt.
Many supermarkets are open 24 hours a day making a choice of healthy food available at all times.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Scared to go out to a meeting to speak to a client? Need to deliver a speech but feel like fainting at the thought of going in front of the class to present? Scared to attend a social gathering for no apparent reason? You might be suffering from social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is a kind of mental disorder where the sufferer experiences a severe or unreasonable fear of social gatherings where there is a possibility that one may get embarrassed or ridiculed. Most of the time, these anxieties arise from an intense fear of being closely watched or scrutinized – from the simple things like the way they dress, talk or act; to important job functions like performing in front of a crowd, giving a presentation, or finishing an interview for a job application. This kind of phobia gives sufferers a feeling of being trapped or shut away from the world.

They say social anxiety disorder is closely related to shyness. However social phobia differs in the sense that this disrupts normal socializing functions. It is true that everyone goes through a stage of shyness in their life, overcoming it is a different thing. When it becomes too much that it interrupts your daily life and relationships to the point where you are sick with worry, it is time to seek counsel. It is good to know the signs and symptoms of social anxiety disorder to be able to determine and treat this said condition before it worsens.

People with social phobia manifest 2 basic kinds of symptoms: emotional and physical. The emotional symptoms include: an intense fear of being in situations in which you don’t know people, fear of situations in which you may be judged, worrying about embarrassing or humiliating yourself, fear that others will notice that you look anxious, anxiety that disrupts your daily routine, work, school or other activities, avoiding doing things or speaking to people out of fear of embarrassment, avoiding situations where you might be the center of attention. The physical symptoms include: Blushing, profuse sweating, trembling or shaking, nausea, stomach upset, difficulty talking, shaky voice, muscle tension, confusion, palpitations, diarrhea, cold and clammy hands, and difficulty making eye contact.

Basically, this phobia manifests a symptom of being overly anxious around other people. Sufferers think that other people are more confident that they are, that other people are better them. They feel uncomfortable being around people that it makes it difficult for them to eat, drink, work, asking questions, asking for dates, even going to the toilet, when other people are around.

The good news is that there is a cure for this condition. For the past 20 years, a combination of talk therapy and medications has proven most helpful to limit the effects, if not cure, this mental condition. Certain anti-depressants (Paroxetine, Sertraline and Venlafaxine), anti-anxiety medications, and beta blockers are used to help Socio-phobic people to balance certain chemicals in the brain and minimize panic attacks during periods of heightened anxiety. Talk therapy teaches people with social anxiety disorder to react differently to situations that trigger their anxiety. The therapist helps the patient confront the negative feelings about social situations and the fear about being judged by others. Patients learn how their thinking patterns add to the symptoms of social anxiety disorder and how to change their thinking so the symptoms begin to lessen.
To be shy is quite normal, everybody has gone through a similar phase. Getting past that stage is the difficult part. Ultimately, it ends up to building your confidence to a certain level for you to be comfortable enough to move normally. In case you’ve been diagnosed as a socio-phobic, it is nothing to be ashamed of. With a little bit of therapy, proper medication, and enough support from people who believe in you, you’ll slowly be able to do socialize and function normally within a group without being too anxious.

The Health Benefits Of Flax Seeds

422
