Generators are used for electric power generation. Two categories of diesel generators are basically available in market- one is portable generator and the other is standby generator. Diesel Generators are mostly used to make sure that electric appliances can be run when there is a power failure. Standby diesel generators are mostly used in homes and offices and installed outside the house or office building. These are plugged in home wiring or electric power circuit. These can automatically detect power failure and start supplying power with in moments. Portable diesel generators are used on sites where there is much less supply of electric power and they can only run few small appliances like refrigerators, televisions and turnaces.

Diesel generators use comparatively less fuel and thus are more fuel efficient than power generated by gasoline or natural gas. For every liter of fuel consumed, diesel generators can run 2 to 3 times more efficiently than natural gas engines. There is no need of frequent maintenance for diesel engines, but gasoline engines need more frequent maintenance. Most diesel engines designed with water-cooled engine up to a speed of 1800 rounds per minute. This makes sure that the engine is durable, and makes it most dependable of all generators.

Unlike other natural gas generators and gasoline generators, diesel engines are very safe to use because they work on direct injection principle and they do not have any spark plugs. The unavailability of spark plug keeps them safe from fire. Diesel generator has a better shelf life. This is the least flammable source of fuel, hence can be stored for more time.

The fuel for the diesel generators is available at all gas stations and can be collected in comfortable cans. Main problems in case of diesel generators are: it is very hard to start them in cold weather, they are noisy and emit more smoke. Home diesel generators may cost $ 800 for 4 kilowatt to $10000 for a 15-kilowatt depending upon the rating, voltage consumption, quality and brand name. Diesel generators can also be used in industrial purposes. For industrial purpose they are available in range of 500 kilowatt to 2000 kilowatt.

Fuels such as diesel, gasoline, natural gas, or propane can basically power home generators. Some models of diesel generators also designed with multi fuel capabilities. The fuel choice of will depend on availability of fuel during emergency times.

The excitement of buying a new home and the desire to save money can lead the potential homeowner down a dark, crumbling drywall road. Some people think that a pest inspection is an unnecessary and costly step in the home buying process, especially if neighboring houses don’t have a problem or the owner swears upon the sanctity of their mother’s grave that there are no bug problems. However, I believe that it is a lot more costly to pay to evict two million tiny squatters and repair the damage they cost you.

Some people are of the opinion that pests only infest lower-quality houses and condos, but this is fallacious in the extreme. Any residence can serve as a cafeteria for wood-destroying organisms. And, if you’re paying several hundred thousands of dollars more than the homes you would think would be more prey to this kind of problem, doesn’t it make sense to make sure that money is well invested in a solid structure?

A pest inspection is often called a termite inspection because termites are the most infamous of the pests who like to snack on your house and belongings. However, there are more critters out there that like to argue the merits of pine vs fir. Some of these include carpenter ants, carpet beetles and silverfish. All of these pests like wood, but they can leave different evidence that only an experienced person can detect.

Like the home inspection, the pest inspection should be part of your paperwork. Your offer to purchase the home should be conditional upon the home meeting a standard that you have determined that you can live with. Sometimes a small nest of nasties can be eradicated with a small outlay of time and noxious chemicals. However, if the supports of the house resemble birds’ bones, you should take your down payment and back slowly away.

A good pest inspector is going to take their time to thoroughly inspect your house. Since a lot of pests don’t always go out of their way to yell, HI! I’m HERE!” to the concerned home buyer, pest inspectors have to crawl into out-of-the-way spots, like the attic or basement, to check for signs. It’s sometimes a dusty and dirty job, but most pest inspectors are prepared for this.

Before you invite a pest inspector to look over your future domicile, it’s wise to ask them questions, check out their references and check their licensing. Licensing can vary from state to state, so be aware of the laws of your area. During the inspection, the inspector should be willing to answer your questions and point out problem areas. You should get a full report and an estimate of the standard that the home meets.

Keep in mind that a pest inspector is not Superman; X-ray vision is beyond them. They cannot guarantee that your future residence is free of pests; just that it appears free. Many recommend regular inspections, to catch problems before they become a serious threat to the soundness and equity of your house.

Would you go to your real estate agent for advice on the stock market? Probably not. While your real estate agent does help you with a different kind of investment your home that doesn t make them automatically qualified to give you advice on the latest IPO from Wall Street.

When you want good information you go to the authority. You go to the expert on the topic! Want investment information? See an investment specialist. Got a cough and fever? See a doctor. Want to buy a car? Go to the dealership.

But when you re looking around at many choices, which is the right one to choose? Which one, among your many choices, is the authority on the information you want?

In the home warranty industry it s hard to tell. You type in home warranty in a search engine and several companies come up. Who do you choose? Which one will tell you the information you need to make good decisions and which ones will try to sell you something you don t need?

Here are a few ways to help you discover which home warranty company is the authority on the home warranty industry. Search for home warranty websites and compare them. What do you notice?

Many home warranty companies try to straddle the fence and cater to their paying customers AND their service providers AND realtors all at the same time. When push comes to shove, how much of their time are they going to spend on you? (Hint: if only one-third of their website is spent on you there s a good chance that only one-third of their attention is focused on you). How can a home warranty provider be an authority in the industry when they re so busy trying to be all things to all people?

Most home warranty companies tell you what kind of policy you should have. They ll tell you that you need all your ceiling fans covered even if you don t own any ceiling fans. And they ll make you pay for them. How can a home warranty provider be an authority in the industry when you re the expert on your home but they re telling you what should be covered?!?

How many home warranty companies provide you with unbiased industry analysis in the form of reports, RSS feeds, and whitepapers to help guide you through the decision-making process? A day in the life of a home improvement contractor

Last week I discussed what a homeowner should look for when hiring a contractor. Today I would like to discuss what an honest contractor has to consider in running his business. When I first started out, I was gung ho like any contractor all full of spit and vinegar. I would put on my polo shirt with my company name proudly displayed. I would make sure the boots were clean and the jeans were wrinkle free. Another day of going out and conquering the world. Well one day I landed the big one , I was elated! I just got my foot in the door of a sizable job and all I had to do was close. I mean c mon I was going to be rich! The job was like 20 grand! (Step out of the way Howard Hughes). Well I scheduled the meeting and promptly showed. I do not think my feet even touched the ground as I walked into the homeowner s house. I had all my figures on me and was loaded for bear. That is when the clouds started accumulating and the vultures were ready to pick my bones. I had made a presentation that would have made my mom proud. However, reality came in the voice of the homeowner as if it was in slow motion. I called you here, he said. To ask you if you could beat this price . Wait a minute! I thought. There is another price? He hands the quote to me and my legs go weak. This isn t a quote for this job, I thought to myself. This is the tab for picking up the dinner!
How can a contractor give such a price? I asked the person Is this quote for the project that I looked at? Yes he said. And not only that he will do this extra Well there I was young and na ve he got the drop on me. So what did I do? Before I could think I said Sure I can do this job Heck and I can even do the extra that someone out of his mind promised! Well I got the job and yeah I paid the price. A lesson learned in all of this is if you are an honest contractor and want to survive in this field, you had better be ready to lose some jobs or lose your business. Because there are contractors and customers out there that don t care about your overhead and in the end most of the under priced jobs cost both the contractor and homeowner alike. That is where all of the horror stories come from. In addition, I know that the most seasoned contractors will not consider taking these jobs. However, realize this. These contractors are your competition and customers need to know this. An honest price for the job will make the contractor and homeowner s project a positive experience. The overhead for contractors on the level is very high and there is a reason for their pricing.

The Home Doctor has the answers to your building questions.

Q: A recent storm wreaked havoc on my roof and I’m now facing a roof replacement project for the first time. What should I know about shingles before diving into the reroof with my contractor?

A: Before I answer your question, I want to be sure you’re working with a reputable contractor. Ask your roofer if he has insurance and get a written estimate for the work. It’s a good idea to ask for a couple of references to follow up on in advance of signing a contract. The Better Business Bureau can also alert you to any complaints that have been filed against the company.

Once you are comfortable with the contractor, it’s time to investigate shingle options. Interestingly, I’ve found that contractors will frequently recommend a shingle identical to the one they are replacing. There are so many new options in roofing that you’d be remiss not to investigate. From dramatic color blends to high-end “luxury” looks and outstanding warranty terms, make sure your contractor gives you a number of choices.

For most homeowners, I recommend asphalt roofing versus slate or wood. Generally, the more traditional materials are more costly and require a significant amount of upkeep over time. Asphalt shingles tend to endure the elements much better and some even come with impact-resistant features. They are more affordable in upfront costs. Plus, new styles of luxury asphalt shingles replicate the look of wood or slate with a likeness and affordability that are hard to beat.

As far as finding a quality shingle, CertainTeed has built a good reputation with its extensive line of asphalt shingles. This is the company that pioneered the increasingly popular multilayer shingle and is known for its innovative design and bold shingle color choices, such as variegated reds, blues and greens. When investigating shingle styles, their Web site is a good place to start.

The style of your home and your personal preference will determine the appropriate shingle for your house. If you want a roof built of high-quality materials and a dramatic, statement-making look, it may be worth looking at CertainTeed’s new Centennial Slate™ or Landmark TL Ultimate™ luxury shingles. The former has a look of true blended slate, the latter is a wood-shake style. Both luxury shingles come with outstanding warranties and use color and layers to capture authentic style

Before the vacuum cleaner the simple task of cleaning floors was not so simple. Area rugs would need to be taken outside, hung from posts and beaten by a large wooden beating stick. Floors were swept and the the debris was picked of by hand and then discarded. Today when we vacuum our floors and carpets it usually takes about ten minutes, but before 1880 cleaning carpets and floors was an all day task.

When vacuum cleaners were first invented they did not resemble the vacuum cleaners of today. These first vacuum cleaners were large and heavy and were usually transported from house to house by horse and carriage or were built in the attics of larger homes with a suction system that was run throughout the house. One of the first large vacuum cleaner units was invented by British engineer called Herbert Booth. Herberts invention consisted of a large box with a gas powdered motor that turned large fans to create suction. Long bendable houses were fed through the doors and windows of a house and debris was sucked into the gas powered unit outside. This first vacuum cleaner was large and heavy and required it to be pulled by horses.

The vacuum cleaner as we know it today was invented in 1908 by James Murray Spangler. This first version of the vacuum cleaner is a far cry from the vacuum cleaners of today due to its simplicity and lack of power. Around 1920 William Hoover purchased the patent for this first vacuum cleaner from James Spangler and the Hoover Vacuum Cleaner Company that we know today was born. This first upright vacuum cleaner resembled a box on a stick with a satin bag attached to catch debris. The actual vacuum cleaner itself was made from a pillow case, an electric fan and a modified soap box. The beater bar was added to the vacuum cleaner around 1926 which dramatically improved the performance of the unit. This Hoover vacuum cleaner soon became know as the Hoover Model 700 and was an instant hit. William Hoovers new patent was soon to catch on and by 1950 nearly every household in America had its very own Hoover vacuum cleaner.

The basic design and principle of the vacuum cleaner remained the same from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s. In this 30 year span additional modifications were made to the principal design such as vacuum cleaner self propulsion and an exterior hose that could quickly attach to the vacuum cleaner to clean baseboards and other hard to reach areas. In the 1980’s James Dyson invented the cyclonic bag less vacuum cleaner with increased suction and the added savings of not needing a filter bag to catch the debris. This cyclonic vacuum cleaner creates a vortex in the debris chamber that sends the debris to the outside walls of the container and the air is then pushed out through an exhaust vent.

In the late 1980’s to early 1990’s many vacuum companies started to manufacturer hybrid vacuum cleaners that were built to perform different vacuum duties. The back pack vacuum is one of these hybrids and consists of a canister like vacuum cleaner that is worn on the back like a back pack with a long hose that is used to clean walls ceilings and hard to reach places. The wet dry vacuum cleaner was introduced not only pick up dry debris but also liquids. This type of vacuum utilizes a motor and a float valve that protects the motor against water contact and damage to the electrical interior of the motor windings.

The latest and greatest innovation in vacuum cleaners is the closed system vacuum cleaner. It is currently being designed in England and its primary goal is to not suck air in and then exhaust it out but to circulate the air in a closed chamber so that dust particles are not released into the air. By keeping dust and other particles in the vacuum cleaner chamber the air in the environment that is being cleaned is not polluted.

Learn the interesting history of how stained glass originated and how it progressed to what we see today.

Stained glass, in general, refers to both the colored glass and also the craft or art of making it. The color is obtained by adding metallic salts such as copper, gold, and cobalt to molten glass. The colored glass pieces is then stuck together using lead strips – to form designs, patterns, or pictures and held in place with the aid of a rigid frame. The same principle works for stained glass window panes as well as stained glass lamps.

The most interesting aspect with stained glass making is the engineering skills required to assemble the collage. When assembled, now as a single entity, the stained glass piece has to stand the weight of its own without cracking at any point. In the case of stained glass windows, it also has to withstand the wind pressure continuously. No wonder, even now, stained glass manufacture remains a skilled art that requires training and precision.

Looking back at the history of stained glass making, it becomes evident that historians from world over had failed to register when exactly humans have mastered the art of stained glass manufacture with precision, even though the history of stained glass lamps is known with more certainty. It is believed that in as early as 2nd century BC, Egyptians were already established glass makers. Artifacts unearthed from Herculaneum and Pompeii gives hint that the Romans were also adept in making stained glass materials in 1st century AD. But, the earliest surviving stained glass piece with a picture on it was excavated from Lorsch Abbey, a place in Germany, and it dates back to the 10th century AD. By the 11th and 12th centuries, when the number of churches in Europe had increased dramatically, stained glass manufacture also witnessed a positive surge and soon it were being used in homes also, thus giving the art a non-religious identity as well. Until then, stained glasses were mostly related to cathedrals, and it even had the name – cathedral glass .

In the 16th century, during Reformation, however, stained glass panes in cathedrals were destroyed in large scale and were replaced by plane glass windows. This was a period when stained glass making took a beating, and the art would have slipped over the brink into a possible extinction during the next two centuries, thanks to the renaissance period that followed – the Victorian and Edwardian eras – in the late 1700s and early/mid 1800s.

Stained glass making received a shot in its arm in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s – during the Art Nouveau period – when American glass makers introduced then a recently patented translucent “milky” glass known as opalescent glass in Europe. The patent was owned by John La Farge. This was also the period when Louis Tiffany revolutionized the lamp making industry with his innovative Tiffany decorative lamps or simply, stained glass lamps. He introduced a technique that was more or less confined to window pane decoration for centuries to the making of lamp shades. This was a move that had transformed the lamp making industry forever. The same method, the core principle intact, is used even today in stained glass lamp making worldwide.

Louis Tiffany used copper foils to tape individual glass pieces, which are then soldered together to form the glass pane. It was in fact the same technique used by people in the earlier centuries, but then they used lead as the material to hold together the glass pieces. But, the substitution of lead with copper foil brought in the advantages of lesser weight, and the metal s malleability ensured that finer lines and hence complex designs can be weaved in more easily to the stained glass lamps.

Years have gone by, and with changing times, Tiffany stained glass lamps have slowly ceased to be hand made any more. The process has been mechanized and in place of copper foils and colored glass, other costly materials are used instead. The visible fact that there are certain Tiffany lamps that cost hundreds and thousands of dollars will give one an idea as to what all materials can go into the making of fancy Tiffany lamps.

Post World War II, lots of people have taken to stained glass lamp other stained glass craft as well – making as a hobby, and now there are tens and thousands of skilled hands making stained glass lamps and other products worldwide. Fusing, bending, and slumping of glass in modern electric home kilns has in fact made the job a lot easier, as it took away the element of expertise that was required in the early days, and this is the reason why stained glass lamp making, the vocation, has become so common these days. Also, the easy availability of factory made cheap glass in plenty, availability of teaching methods, and demand for stained glass lamps as decorative items in homes and offices, have contributed immensely to the popularity of stained glass craft in such a large scale.

Stained glass lamps and windows have evolved continuously in the last ten centuries, and will continue to do so. As long as we humans enjoy the rainbow of colors that the light passing through a stained glass piece produces, stained glass lamp industry, the craft, will survive the vagaries of time for sure. May be the techniques and methods would undergo sophistication and revolution with time; but, for sure, not the final product.

Weaving is nothing new, our ancestors have been doing it for thousands of years. The first weaving that was done was to make baskets. They made baskets out of anything that was pliable, leaves, grass, twigs and whatever materials could be found at the time.

The most common material used for rugs back then was most likely goat and sheep hair. Later on the Chinese produced wool piles. Some of the first Chinese rugs and carpets were made out of cotton and wool backings.

Some of the first looms were made with two branches that looked like a fork and connected by a crosspiece. The binding threads were then flattened with a bar usually made of wood. They later learned to dye the threads with various natural colors from fruit, vegetables, animals and bugs.

In 1769 a machine was invented by a Richard Arkwright. The machine was designed to spin thread onto a bobbin. Not too many years later a machine was designed to spin a thousand threads at a time. Eventually it progressed to where we are at today.

An archaeologist in the 1950’s found a rug that dated back to 500 BC or before. It was found in a frozen state in Siberia. It was a knotted rug of Turkish descent. This just goes to show you that rugs are by no means something new. Our ancestors have been using them since the beginning of time.

Before people ever started weaving hunters would use the animal hides they got off of their prey to make clothing, rugs, maps and other various things. Today rugs are mass produced by machines and most people have forgotten the history behind rugs. When buying your next rug, remember the history of rugs!

This may come as a surprise to you, but I love picture frames. Anything that can take an ordinary picture and make it look like it s worth 10 times it s true value is a powerful thing. Some people spend their entire lives collecting awards, degrees, and family photos only to have them rot away in their basements collecting dust. Are you one of those people? I didn t think so.

Having the right frame around a picture, degree, or award can make a world of difference and can turn an ordinary piece of paper into a crowing achievement. In fact, I have one item that I value so much that I have had it custom framed for $130. It was worth it to me as I m going to have this item for the rest of my life. While $130 did not break my bank account, I was amazed to later find that there are lots of other better deals that you can find on picture frames that don t cost an arm and a leg.

Here are three ways you can save big bucks on picture frames.

1)Don t pay for someone s prime real estate. If you shop at a fancy shopping center in a major city, you might be paying too much for whatever you are looking to purchase. Guess what? The overhead that is being charged in that shopping center is going to be built into the price of your purchase. This includes picture frames. I regularly drive by 1st class real estate developments that have HUGE picture frame shops. Ever wonder how these shops can afford their high rent prices? That s right. From your purchases. Look at buying your picture frames online or from places that aren t in the fanciest parts of town. The same frames can often be found for much better prices.

2)Look at do it yourself framing. Now this option isn t for everyone. If you have some basic technical skills (and I mean real basic), take a look at putting a frame together yourself. If you do go to a retail framing place, they will undoubtedly charge you time and labor to set your picture in it s new frame. If you can do it yourself, go for it: you might be surprised at how good you really are at assembling things. Usually, all it takes to put together your own picture frame is a few specialized little tools, some miniature screws, and some hard work. Afterwards, you can even look at your work with pride knowing the effort you put into it. This is a great option for those of us who have more time than money.

3)Saving someone else s rent charge and doing it yourself are great pieces of advice but don t matter when talking about digital picture frames. Digital pictures frames are the wave of the future. If you know all about digital picture frames, you will be far ahead of the game and won t have to worry about what real picture frames cost anyway. Digital picture frames are here to stay.
