Water filters, purifiers and water filtration systems convert ordinary tap water into perfectly safe drinking water. They remove impurities and contaminants by means of a fine physical barrier or a chemical process.

Health benefits of a water filter:

A water filter or water purifier is very beneficial for healthy living. Ordinary water contains numerous contaminants including bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, minerals, and man-made chemical pollutants that cannot be seen with the naked eye. These contaminants not only cause the water to taste bad, but are also very harmful to your health.

A water filter kills all of these organisms and filters out the contaminants to make the water fit for drinking. Thus water filters save us from many dangerous bacterial and viral diseases that spread due to the contamination of water.

The working technique of water filters is based on sieving, ion exchanges and other processes. A water filter can eliminate particles much smaller than the holes through which the water passes.

Alkaline water ionizers provide alkaline water. The following are the health benefits of alkaline water:

Promotes optimal physical performance.
Protects DNA from oxidative damage.
Alleviates blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.
Betters liver function exams in hepatic disorders.
Betters gastro duodenal ulcer and prevents recurrences.
Betters allergic disorders such as asthma, urticaria, rhinites and atopic dermatitis.
Betters hypertension and hypotension.
Betters serum bilirubin levels in newborn babies.
Impressively suppressed the growth of cancer cells transplanted into mice, demonstrating their anti-cancer effects.

The following are acid water health benefits:

Electrolyzed oxidizing water inactivates Escherichia coli and Listeria on plastic kitchen cutting boards.
It reduces bacterial load of treated alfalfa sprouts between 91.1% and 99.8%.
It can reduce food borne pathogens.
It is a useful disinfectant for hospital infections.

Water filters and purifiers can be purchased at water filter stores and online. The Pur water filter and Brita water filter are the two well-known brands of water filters.

Getting your clothes clean is all about water temperature and choice of detergent. If you have trouble regulating your washer’s water temperature, your water inlet valve may be at fault.

This article follows up on the first article: Washer Woes: Part One Water Temperature. If you ve already read Part One and are still having problems regulating your washer’s water temperature, read on to learn how to examine, test, and replace your water inlet valve.

Water enters the water inlet valve through two hoses that originate from the hot and cold water taps in your wall. Solenoids inside the water inlet valve respond to the temperature selector switch and create the selected water temperature. The mixed hot and cold water exits the water inlet valve through a common hose, filling your washer with the correct temperature of water.

Never attempt any repairs or maintenance on your washer without making sure the power to your washer is disconnected you could be seriously injured if the power isn’t disconnected.

The water inlet valve is located at the back of your washer (inside the cabinet). Before examining the water inlet valve, check the water flow. Shut off the water taps (at the wall) and disconnect the hoses from the back of the washer. Place the disconnected end of each hose in an empty bucket and turn on the water. Now check the flow of water and to make sure the hoses aren’t blocked.

If the water flow appears to be correct, remove and examine the water inlet valve. The valve is held in place by two screws. Remove the screws and then disconnect the valve s washer fill hose by loosening the clamp that holds the hose in place on the valve.

Now that the valve is removed, use a small, flat-head screwdriver to pop out the valve s inlet screens. Carefully inspect and clean any debris from the screens. Be careful not to damage the screens – they cannot be replaced. If the screens are free of debris, the next step is to test the valve.

To test the water inlet valve, locate the wires attached to the terminals on each solenoid. Label the wires prior to removal so you can remember how to reconnect them. The wires are secured in place by metal slip-on connectors. When disconnecting the wires, use needle nose pliers to remove the connector from the terminal. Pull the connector, not the wire. If the terminals and connectors are rusty or corroded, replace the valve.

If the connections are fine, test your water inlet valve for continuity. You can do this with a multitester. Set your multitester to the ohms resistance scale X1.

Each solenoid has two terminals. Test one solenoid at a time by taking each of your meter’s probes and touching one to each terminal. Readings can be different for each brand or model, but if you get a result of infinity, then the solenoid is damaged and the valve should be replaced.

To replace the old valve with a new one, connect the fill hose to the new valve and secure it in place with the screws. Attach the wires to the solenoid terminals, and the water hot and cold water hoses to the valve openings. When everything is secured, turn on the water. Check the water inlet valve and hoses for leaks before turning on your washing machine and running it through a cycle.

Sometimes there is no way of knowing what is wrong with your water inlet valve and replacing it may be the only solution. If you find this repair difficult to do, or if you don’t have an ohmmeter or a multimeter, contact a service technician.

Washing your clothes in cold water is great if you have cold-water detergent, but regular detergent is designed to work best with warm or hot water. If the water temperature of your washing machine is not properly regulated your clothes may not be getting as clean as they should.

Understanding how your washing machine regulates water temperature can help you determine if your washing machine is working properly. Selecting the temperature setting for your wash cycle doesn t guarantee the water temperature is correct.

Water enters your washer from separate hot and cold water taps in your home. Before making any unnecessary repairs, regulate the temperature of these two taps. In summer months your cold water will be warmer than in winter months, so you won’t need the temperature of the hot water tap to be as high. You can adjust the temperature of the hot water tap by adjusting the temperature settings on your furnace or boiler.

After adjusting the temperature of the water, check the following:

-Make sure the hot and cold taps are completely open.
-Make sure the temperature selector on your washer is set to the correct setting.
-Make sure the hot and cold water hoses are correctly connected to your washer.

If the water temperature is still not correct, check the parts inside the washer that regulate water temperature. Some washers only allow hot or cold water to flow during certain cycles. Some models switch between hot and cold water, while others allow both hot and cold water to flow at the same time. (You can also look in the washer’s manual for more information on how the water entering your washing machine is regulated.) The parts responsible for regulating the temperature of the water are the temperature selector switch and water inlet valve.

The temperature selector switch allows you to choose the temperature of the wash and rinse cycles. Some washers only have a few choices of water temperatures, and some washers have many choices. The temperature selector switch consists of electrical circuits and contacts that open and close depending on the water temperature selected.

The water inlet valve is located at the back of your washer and it’s connected to the cold and hot water taps in your home. The water inlet valve contains two solenoids sometimes referred to as coils. One solenoid is for the hot water and one is for the cold water. The temperature selector switch regulates the opening and closing of the solenoids to control the flow of water through the valve. After the water passes through the solenoids, it leaves the valve through one common hose and fills your washer.

If there’s a problem with your water inlet valve, the water temperature is affected. Find out how to examine, test, and replace your washer’s water inlet valve in next weeks article Washer Woes: Part 2 – How to replace a water-inlet valve.

In this article, we are going to introduce you to all of the in’s and out’s of hot tub warranties. One thing to keep in mind is that while the article is focused on hot tubs, the warranty information included can apply to any big-ticket item, such as a car, television, clothes washer, clothes dryer, refrigerator, dish washer, air conditioner, central heat and air system, swimming pool, hot tub or spa.

AN INTRODUCTION TO WARRANTIES

When you decide to purchase a hot tub or other big-ticket items, you will want to make sure that it is backed up with a solid warranty. Let’s face it; a new hot tub isn’t exactly cheap. A good warranty on your new hot tub can give you the confidence that if something goes wrong with it, that you won’t have to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars to get it repaired.

The various companies that sell hot tubs and other big-ticket items offer a wide variety of warranties. It is critical that you thoroughly read the fine print on all of the warranty information, before you decide to buy a hot tub or another product from a particular company. As the saying goes, “the devil is in the details”. The minor details that differ from one warranty to another can cost you big, if you ever need a major repair made.

UNDERSTAND YOUR WARRANTY PRIOR TO YOUR PURCHASE

With any major purchase like a hot tub, you should not just rush into it and buy impulsively. You need to read the warranty to see if there is any part of it that you do not clearly understand. If you do not understand, then you need to ask questions until you do understand it completely. Any company, that is serious about getting your business and is not trying to hide something, will be more than happy to explain in detail everything that their warranty does or does not cover.

If you are shopping online for a hot tub and you go to various websites, one thing will stand out. Many of the websites do not offer a link to the warranty information, and if they do, it is not easy to find or you might have to click through a number of links to find it. If the company that you are considering buying your hot tub from hides their warranty information, then you really must question why they are doing this and how good their warranty really is.

When you do find hot tub companies that freely give their warranty information, which they all should, then you need to start comparing the different warranties. Some companies will offer a warranty for a certain number of years and other companies may offer a lifetime warranty on “certain parts” of the hot tub.

To put this in perspective, most washing machine manufacturers carry a one-year parts and labor warranty on their machines. And, they offer a five year warranty on the wash tub. So, for the first year, your machine will be repaired if anything breaks. If your wash tub breaks or rusts out within the first five years, then they will replace the tub for you. (What most consumers do not understand is that the appliance manufacturing companies specifically state that they will repair their machines, but they will NOT replace their machines. That applies to washers, dryers, refrigerators, and dish washers.)

COMPARING THE VALUE OF WARRANTIES

Be careful though. A Lifetime Warranty on Parts is often very misleading. What many people fail to realize is that the parts is often the smaller portion of the repair bill. Labor and Travel are frequently the two costs that are the most expensive.

Depending on where you live, your hot tub repair person may have to travel a significant distance to service your hot tub. You will pay their going rate for mileage for the trip to your house to troubleshoot your hot tub, and the distance back to their office. And then, a few weeks later when the part has come in, you will pay again for the repair person to come to your house to repair your equipment, and you will pay their mileage once again for their trip home. This is only the mileage to come to your house. The labor costs are still another factor.

I am a firm believer in the idea that a good Parts and Labor Warranty is far more valuable to me, than a Lifetime Warranty on Parts.

COMMON TRICKS IN THE WORDING OF WARRANTIES

You must also discern between limited and unlimited warranties. Just as the names suggest a limited warranty will only cover certain parts of the hot tub and may or may not cover the labor to make the repair.

Some limited warranties will require that you pay a deductible. A deductible is a way for the company to save money and to not pay for the less expensive repairs. If you have a $500 deductible, and the company knows that most repairs can be made for less than $500, then that company is hoping that they will never have to honor their warranty.

Many companies will offer a warranty that depreciates over time. This means that as the years go by the amount of coverage offered by the warranty will decrease. This also is meant to save the company money. For example, if a hot tub typically does not malfunction for the first one year of its life, then it is easy to offer a full warranty for the first year. But, if there were a depreciating warranty in place then about the time that you would need it, you would be forced to pay more to get your hot tub repaired.

THE ROLE OF WARRANTIES IN MAJOR PURCHASES

Of course, if you buy a hot tub that has a good track record and it is well built, then in most cases, you will not have to use the warranty for your equipment.

Buying a hot tub is like any other major purchase like buying a car or a house.

You understand when you buy a car that you will have to spend money maintaining your investment, and occasionally, you will have to replace broken parts. It is just the nature of the beast. The automobile manufacturers offer warranties to you to help protect you from buying a car that came off of the manufacturing line broken. If there are any unexpected repairs, the car’s warranty will usually cover it. But the car warranty is only good for so many years or so many thousand miles of use.

You understand that when you buy a house, you also have costs of maintenance and repairs. It is just the nature of the beast. You will have to fix things, and outside of the first year, there is not any warranty coverage to protect your investment. All repairs will come out of your pocket or the pocket of your insurance company.

Buying a hot tub is the same way. You will have maintenance expenses and the occasional repair. The warranty was designed to protect your investment from manufacturer defects.

Each hot tub retailer, just like each automobile retailer, will have their own version of a warranty that they put on the products they sell.

Those companies, who believe in their products and who believe in service after the sale, will generally offer a better warranty than their competitors.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR

Do yourself a favor and shop around. Spend as much time comparing warranties as you do comparing hot tubs. The crazy thing is that some retailers will only offer the manufacturer warranty, while others will add their own warranties to the back-end of the manufacturer warranty. It is possible to find the same product in a dozen places with a dozen warranty options.

If the warranty is better at one store over another, then the $50 that separates them in price may be worth every penny. I have already said, and I will say it again. If one company is offering a lifetime warranty on certain parts, and the other company is offering a three-year parts and labor warranty for fifty dollars more in purchase price, I will take the second option every time.

Warranties were not designed to keep you from paying for maintenance and repairs over the long-haul of your purchase. Instead, they were designed to keep you from buying a broken piece of equipment straight from the manufacturer. But if you can get additional protections with your purchase, then why not?

A good warranty will give you piece of mind, and let you enjoy your new hot tub risk-free a lot longer than you might otherwise.

So, kick back, turn on the jets, and enjoy your new hot tub. You will not regret it.

There are as many types of firewood on the market, as there are fireplaces. If you have been heating your home with firewood, you are likely educated in the various types of wood available. If you are considering a wood-burning stove to heat your home or cottage, the following is a summary of the most popular types of wood used.

Ash, Oak, Beech, Birch, Hickory and Hard Maple are by far the best types of wood to use. They each produce a high amount of heat, which is one of the most important considerations. Each of these species burn extremely well, and they are all relatively easy to split. Another feature of these types is that they produce very little heavy smoke and very few sparks.

Aside from the species mentioned above, Soft Maple, Black Cherry, and Yellow Pine are the next best to use. The Soft Maple and Black Cherry each produce a decent amount of heat, but they both burn well and are easy to split. They also produce a low amount of heavy smoke and sparks. Yellow Pine is also quite a decent wood to use. The only significant drawback with Pine is that it tends to smoke a lot, and it may not be ideal for burning inside your home.

Elm, Sweetgum, Basswood, Poplar, and White Pine are all decent species. If you are unable to get any of the wood mentioned above, these will work just fine. None of them produce an impressive amount of heat, but in certain cases some heat is better than none. These species also produce more smoke and sparks than the aforementioned. The Elm and Sweetgum tend not to burn very well, and they are often difficult to split. These woods should be used when you have no other choices available to you.

As is the case with any heating system, your wood-burning stove should be installed by a professional. It must be checked and maintained annually, along with your chimney. Remember to always make safety a priority, and to keep your fireplace tools and fire extinguisher close by in case of an emergency.

There’s good news for those who claim there’s nothing new under the sun when it comes to saving on energy bills. Experts say new benefits and current conditions are making solar energy systems a practical reality for a growing number of homeowners.

With rising energy prices and concerns for the environment and about national security, homeowners are looking at solar energy options. A new federal tax credit, plus some state and local incentives, encourages adopting solar systems. The government offers a tax credit for 30 percent of the cost of a solar electric or solar water heating system. There is no cap for business owners; homeowners receive a maximum $2,000 credit for each system installed.

These credits make solar energy systems a feasible solution for hot water heating and electricity production for many building owners. Many homeowners already benefit from solar heating for their pools and spas without government incentives.

“As awareness grows, along with summer air-conditioning bills, we expect thousands more to consider their solar options,” says Brad Collins, executive director of the American Solar Energy Society, based in Boulder, Colorado. “With continued rising energy costs, consumer interest in clean, renewable energy from secure U.S. energy sources, and federal tax incentives, we believe more homeowners and business owners will look for sustainable alternatives,” he adds.

In most states, another advantage of solar electric systems (also called photovoltaic or PV) is the option to send excess energy back to your local utility grid. For example, if you are a residential customer, your system may generate more electricity than you need during the day when your family is away at work and at school. Net metering allows you to send this excess electricity to the grid, spinning your meter backwards, and reducing or offsetting the electricity you use at other times.

Today, solar energy equipment is high quality and reliable; it is backed by warranties from large, reputable firms and installed by experienced contractors. There are also many resources to learn more about solar energy.

“FindSolar.com is a great starting place to learn more about solar energy and to assess the options for your own particular home or building,” says Julia Judd, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Solar Electric Power Association. “With minimal inputs, including your state, county, utility, and typical monthly energy bill, the site provides you with estimates of system size, costs, savings and other benefits.”

As people explore the possibility of installing a radiant heat system, many compare a staple-up radiant heat system to a Warmboard system. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but this article will give you some pointers on choosing the correct system for your home.

Many people are confused over the choice between Warmboard and a staple up radiant heating system. This article should help to set you straight.

A Warmboard system combines a structural subfloor with a complex radiant panel into one straightforward radiant heating system. It s basically a strong, broad, weather-resistant, 4′ X 8′ sheet of plywood, with a series of channels cut into the top plane and a thick sheet of high-grade aluminum, which is permanently bonded to each panel. The aluminum is highly conductive. In fact, it s about 30% more conductive than most common alloys, but it also cools down quickly.

Warmboard replaces the normal structural subfloor. It can be cut, nailed or screwed directly to your floor joists just like any conventional subfloor.

Most Warmboard systems function with water ranging in temperature between 90 and 110 , however if you are considering a wool carpet, or another high resistant floor covering, you can easily raise your water temperatures and still operate your heating system efficiently.

Warmboard also have two important properties – they have high conductivity and low thermal mass, which means they will heat us quickly and retain heat quite well, but not quite as long as radiant systems imbedded in concrete.

In comparison, a staple up radiant heat system is the most unobtrusive radiant heat to install in an existing home. It will not add any additional floor height or disrupt your existing floor coverings as it is installed underneath the current subfloor between the floor joists.

This system is perfect when you want to add a radiant heat system without replacing your floors or floor coverings. For example, if your basement is unfinished you could easily staple up radiant heat tubing between your ceiling, or floor joists.

A staple-up system is not as responsive as the aluminum base method, but is more responsive than the thermal mass method

Your basement is not insulated by the soil around it. Adding insulation to your basement walls reduces heat loss and makes your basement more comfortable. But, you need to take the right precautions or you might suffer costly damage.

basement insulation, finishing a basement, basement leak repair, basement flooring

To find the best Garden Maintenance Company in Dublin, click here for Leaf2Leaf Landscapes.
Many people don t insulate their basement walls because they mistakenly believe that the soil outside does the insulating for them. Unfortunately, soil is not a good insulator and heat loss from your basement can account for over one third of the total heat loss from your home.

Done properly, basement insulation will not only reduce heat loss, but it will make your basement warmer, drier and much more comfortable.

There are two main ways to insulate your basement interior insulation and exterior insulation.

For interior basement insulation, you can use any of the main types of home interior insulation, including fibreglass batts, rigid foam board and spray foam. Having a metal or wood frame of studs will help support the insulation and give you a place to attach drywall or panelling.

You should install a moisture barrier over the bare wall before adding the stud frame and insulation. Also, add a vapour barrier over the installed stud frame and insulation before adding drywall and panelling.

For exterior basement insulation, you must excavate the soil around your home so you can get to the outside surfaces of your basement walls. Cover the entire surface of the wall with a layer of waterproofing material before adding rigid insulation. Metal flashing and a protective cover must be installed over the insulation to make sure moisture does not get between the insulation and the basement wall.

Before installing any kind of basement insulation, you need to fix any cracks, leaks or other moisture problems. Moisture can seriously damage your finished basement and the problem is far more difficult and expensive to fix after a basement is finished.

On the inside, moisture and vapour barriers will help reduce condensation, but they do not prevent water leaking through wall cracks. A basement waterproofing system is the best way to make sure you do not have moisture problems from any source.

On the outside, install a drainage system when insulating the wall. Again, waterproofing your basement will protect you from water damage.

The trained basement waterproofing professionals at Clarke Basement Systems know how to make your basement dry and get it ready for your basement insulation inside and out.
