If you ve been blowing your nose until you resemble Rudolph and your head feels like it is about to explode from your sinus headache, you may be suffering from allergies to the pollutants in your home. Someone has probably mentioned that an air purifier will help you feel better. However, what does an air purifier do?

One of the most important functions of an air purifier is its ability to remove pollutants such as cigarette smoke, dust, pollen, mold, and pet dander from the air. Another reason people use these machines is to remove odors. There are several types of air purifiers and each works a bit differently. These filters in these purifiers include: the ionizer, the HEPA filter, the combination ionizer/HEPA filter, the activated carbon filter, and the antibacterial filter.

The ionizer is one of the most popular air purifiers. Unlike other purifiers, the ionizer does not actually remove pollutants from the house. Instead, this machine makes the pollutants so heavy that they fall from the air and drop to the floor. If you have allergies, you will need to use a vacuum that has a HEPA filter to clean the floors before the room is truly allergen free.

If you don t want to pull out your vacuum, you may be thinking that you should simply use a HEPA filter instead of an ionizer. HEPA filters suck dirty air in, run it through the filter, where most pollutants are trapped, and then blow the clean air back into the room. However, a HEPA filter can t clean the smallest particles from the air and isn t great at removing odors from the room. To get your air really clean, you would need a HEPA filter combined with an ionizer or with an activated carbon filter.

The activated carbon filter used to be extremely popular. This filter is great at getting smells out of the air. However, it doesn t do as good a job when it is trying to remove pollen, dust, mold, or pet dander. Now, this filter is usually used along with a HEPA filter instead of being used by itself.

Finally, for people concerned with bacteria or germs, an antibacterial filter is an important air purifier. These filters are especially popular in situations such as a home daycare, where people are being exposed to many germs. However, while these filters are very effective at removing germs, they are rarely used on their own. They work best when they are combined with a HEPA filter.

Many people think that home warranties are exclusive to new homes. This is not accurate, although for many years home warranties were primarily marketed for newly constructed houses. Today, many people are becoming more aware of home warranties for older homes.

Home warranties can either be purchased for the home by the buyer or the seller of the property. A seller usually purchases a home warranty to solidify a sale, increase the saleability and increase the sale price of the home. Buyers usually purchase a home warranty when they buy an older home to cover the cost of any unexpected, major repairs.

Regardless of why you are purchasing a home warranty, it is important to look at the coverage that is offered by the company. Coverage varies from company to company and state to state. When you talk to a home warranty agent, be sure to ask what is and is not covered on your home warranty specifically.

Most home warranties will cover:

  • Air conditioning system
  • Built in dishwasher
  • Built in microwave
  • Built in trash compactor
  • Ceiling fans
  • Central heating unit
  • Duct work
  • Electrical systems
  • Garbage disposal unit
  • Plumbing systems
  • Refrigerator
  • The oven or range
  • Washer and dryer
  • Water heater

Most of everything else is not covered. This includes:

  • Outdoor sprinkler systems
  • Outdoor water systems
  • Faucet repairs (unless otherwise stated in the policy)
  • Spas (you can request/add this coverage in some cases)
  • Pools (you can request/add this coverage in some cases)
  • Hot tubs (you can request/add this coverage in some cases)
  • Permit fees
  • Hauling away debris
  • Hauling away old appliances

It is important to remember that some, or all, of these following are not covered on a few select plans, so if you are looking for this coverage, be sure to ask for these items to be included:

  • Washers (because they are not built in to the home and are not always included with a home.)
  • Dryers (because they are not built in to the home and are not always included with a home.)
  • Garbage disposals
  • Garage door openers
  • Refrigerators

There are also several things that could cause your home warranty to be invalid for a claim, which is another thing you need to check on before you sign on the dotted line and pay for your home warranty. Improper maintenance of the items covered by your home warranty tops the list for reasons your claim may be denied from the warranty company. Code violations and improper installation are also included in reasons why your request for a claim could be denied. It’s important that you check that your appliances are installed correctly and that your home meets the building codes. Before you purchase a home with a home warranty, have an inspection done and be sure to find out if the electrical and plumbing systems are up to code. Unusual wear and tear on an appliance is also a cause for non-allowance of a claim with a home warranty company. It is best that you ask your home warranty agent what will deny coverage for a claim and have that put in writing with your home warranty policy.

When you are talking to the agent for a home warranty, ask for your policy in writing, as well as anything else that you spoke about. For example, if your home warranty agent tells you that the garbage disposal is included in the warranty, be sure that is in writing in the policy.

It is important, too, to remember that home warranty policies change from company to company. The rates, what is and is not covered and all the terms and conditions of a home warranty can differ greatly between two companies. Never assume that two home warranty policies from two companies are the same, or even similar, until you have compared the policies (in writing).

Finding out after the fact that something isn’t covered with your home warranty is not a good place to find yourself in. Be sure to really do your home work with the home warranty before you agree to it and pay for it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of the agent who is selling you the home warranty, if you cannot get the questions you have answered, then it’s best to look elsewhere.

The hot summer season can make one yearn for some of the sweet things in life that can be bought with money like a personal pool right in the comforts of your own home. It does not matter if you own a small or a large pool, for as long as it serves its purpose of refreshing your body.

A home pool is practical because it can be a source of enjoyment for the whole family. It can be a relaxing way to spend your free time away from the hectic schedule of work and city life. It can also serve as a venue for partying with friends and even business associates.

Having one s own pool can be expensive but it can far outweigh the hassle of driving towards a public swimming pool and bathing in public where you are not sure of the health hazards.

Most people said they would build themselves a private swimming pool if only they have a budget for it. However, the trend of having home pools has significantly decreased the cost of owning one. Another consideration is the size of your home since a swimming pool can take considerable space.

While owning a swimming pool can be fun, the owner must content with safety and health issues especially in maintaining his pool. To make sure that your private pool can provide maximum enjoyment for the family, you must equip it with the necessary equipment that will be used not only for enjoyment but also for cleaning and for health maintenance.

Before even buying or constructing a pool and the necessary pool supplies, you have to make sure that your children get swimming lessons. This will lessen pool-related accidents and will give you the assurance that they at least know the basic rudiments of swimming.

A swimming pool can be inground or above ground. The accessories or pool supplies you need will depend on what swimming pool you have in your home. It also depends on what functions you want your swimming pool to have.

A pool that is primarily intended for family enjoyment can be installed with fountains and slides. This can be fun for children who love to cavort in water at anytime. However, the slide should be made of hard plastic or other safe and non corrosive materials.

A pool of whatever size will require pool pumps as it will keep your pool healthy. The pump should however match the size of your pool to be more effective. Other pool supplies that can be used to accessorize your pool includes a torpedo, water volleyball or basketball set, water noodles to keep you afloat, goggles to protect your eyes and inflatable chairs.

There are various supplies and accessories that can make your swimming pool look and function better. You can surf the internet as there are websites that are specifically intended for pool supplies. If you want this to be a family thing, then you can also scout for pool supplies with the whole family.

Welding is used across the globe in some way in nearly every industry you can imagine. It s used in industrial settings, open air environments, underwater and even in outer space. Welding is used on almost every scale by handymen and structural engineers. And because there are so many uses for welding, there are also many different types of welding, each suited to different jobs and purposes. We re going to take a look at some of the more popular kinds of welding.

Forge Welding
While not used as much as it was in the 19th century, there is still a place for forge welding today, especially when creating high-quality collectible knives and swords. This method of welding is one of the oldest around and relies on a process of heating and pounding metal. Forge welding is the craft employed by blacksmiths of old, making swords, weapons, horseshoes and many other day to day necessities.

Arc Welding
Arc welding relies on a welding power supply to create an electric arc between a positively charged electrode and a negatively charged steel place. The electrical current will jump through the resulting air gap and will create an arc of enormous heat capable of melting metal.

Arc welding is one of the most widely used welding methods around and has many different secondary branches including:

AC (Alternating Current) Arc Welding
DC (Direct Current) Arc Welding
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
Submerged Arc Welding (SAW),
As well as many other specialized methods.

Gas Welding
Unlike arc welding, which relies on electricity, gas welding uses gas (usually a combustion of acetylene and oxygen) to produce a welding flame that exceeds temperatures of 3000 degrees Celsius.

Gas welding is one of the planets oldest and most versatile welding processes, but has gone out of fashion in industrial applications over the recent years. However, it is still popular to use when welding pipes and tubing, as well as with completing some repairs.

Varieties of gas welding methods include:

Oxyfuel welding
Air Acetylene Welding
Oxygen Hydrogen Welding, and
Pressure Gas Welding.

Resistance Welding
Resistance welding uses the application of an electric current along with mechanical pressure to create a weld between two pieces of metal.

This method allows higher speeds, easy automation and is suitable for high production rates. However, the initial equipment costs and lower tensile & fatigue strengths temper out the payoff.

Resistance welding is used heavily in the automotive industry.

Energy Beam Welding
As its name suggests, energy beam welding is a category of welding which utilizes a beam of such high energy intensity that it is capable of melting and vaporizing metals. This process of welding uses electron or laser beams and is very useful for precision welding, drilling and cutting.

Solid State Welding
Our final category, solid state welding is very similar to forge welding in that it doesn t rely on the melting of metal to work. One of the most popular methods of solid state welding is ultrasonic welding, a process very similar to resistance welding, except instead of relying on an electrical current, vibration is used to create the energy output. Ultrasonic welding is used for making electrical connections out of aluminum or copper, and it is also a very common polymer welding process.

Other popular methods of solid state welding include:

Explosion welding (relies on the use of incredibly high pressure and is often used to join two dissimilar materials.)
Co-extrusion welding
Cold welding
Diffusion welding
Friction welding
High frequency welding
Hot pressure welding
Induction welding, and
Roll welding.

Between these many different welding methods (and many more we didn t identify) we are able to graft metals and other materials together in such a way that skyscrapers, space shuttles and automobiles can take shape. But, we can also do something as intricate as make jewelry. We ve been welding for millennia, and we ll do it for many millennia more.

Slips on wet and newly refinished floors is a million dollar industry in the United States for people in the law profession. Slips on wet and newly refinished floors is a million dollar industry in the United States for people in the law profession. If someone falls and gets hurt on your floors after you’ve either mopped them or refinished them and you don’t have the area marked correctly with warning signs, there is a big chance that you will get sued and you will loose. Insurance companies and private industry loose millions of dollars every year because a wet floor was not marked with warning signs or wet floor cones. If someone does slip on your wet floors and the area is marked correctly with warning signs the court will usually side in your favor because you took the precautionary measures to let people know that they were entering a hazardous area. A good rule of thumb to remember when using wet floor signs is to make them visible from every direction that enters the area. If possible purchase wet floor signs with pictograms or pictures of a person falling. A picture can sometimes say a thousand words and with the multilingual barrier in the United State at least in court you can say there was a pictogram describing a hazardous situation. Wet floor signs come in many forms, there are wet floor cones, folding signs, wet floor barriers and caution tape. Most of these wet floor warning tools are colored in bright yellow or bright orange to make them highly visible.

Wet floor cones are probably the most economical way to mark a hazardous area. They can be used for many purposes as well as marking wet areas. Most wet floor cones come in orange and yellow and do not display any written warnings or pictograms. Wet floor cones can be easily stacked one inside one another and stored in a small amount of space. When purchasing wet floor cones make sure to buy ones that are taller than any objects in the area that may block their view. The more pronounced your wet floor cones are, the less likely someone will not see them and slip and fall.

Wet floor signs that can fold in half are also a great way to mark a dangerous area. Folding wet floor signs unfold into an A shape which make them stable when put them into place. These folding signs mostly come in bright yellow and are very noticeable when entering a room. These are the most popular wet floor signs and can commonly be seen in all types on commercial and private facilities. Folding signs can come with written warning text and pictograms. The warning text on some of these signs come in a bilingual format such as Spanish and English but other languages can be found.

Wet floor barriers and caution tape are my favorites as far as safety equipment is concerned. The best way to avoid a law suit regarding a hazardous floor is to block the area off completely until it is safe. Sometimes this is not possible in a main access area but if no one can enter the area then no one can get hurt. Mobile barriers are light weight and very visible and can be unfolded to cordon off a walkway.

After reviewing the types of safety signs that can be used in an area its easy to see how a company or individual can protect themselves against possible lawsuits. If somebody slips and falls on your flaw chances are you are going to be sued, after all your a big company and you have all the money in the world and they are the one suffering, at least that’s how they will see it.

Sump Pump importance

How many of us understand the importance of the sump pump in keeping water away from the foundation of our homes? When was the last time you checked your sump pump for proper operation? Notice any foundation cracks around your home? Ever make the connection that your sump pump may be the cause of this cracking .? Think again. Water is the #1 enemy of a home. As a homeowner, your maintenance checklist should include checking the key items that ensure all surface and sub-surface water is directed away from the home.

This includes controlling surface water, controlling sub-surface water, and a properly operating and maintained sump pump discharge system. The following components are an integral part of a water control program for every homeowner;

1) Surface Water Control

Gutters & Downspouts

o Ensure no obstructions are in the gutters and ensure downspouts push out away from home

Lot Grading

o Ensure landscaping does not slope back towards the home

2) Sub-Surface Water Control

Perimeter Drain System

o Surface water can move along the foundation wall

o This water is collected by the perimeter drain system and sent to the sump pump for discharge away from the home

3) Sump Pump Discharge System

The sump pit gathers water from the perimeter drains, allowing this water to flow away from the foundation

When the level reaches a set height, the sump turns on and discharges water away from the home

Sump Pump Problems

Stuck floats & pump failure are the #1 sump problems

o If your float is stuck, or the pump fails, the sump will not come on and will not discharge the water

o This fills the sump, traps water in the perimeter drains, and traps water against the foundation walls of the home

Sump Pump Failure Results

The results of sump failures can be dramatic and costly:

o Foundation wall movement (due to expansive soils)
o Flooded basement
o Mold growth

Sump Pump Testing

It is important to check your sump pump regularly to make sure that it is in proper working condition.

Remove the cover and slowly pour water into the sump tank.
Watch for the “float” to rise and trigger the pump.
Once the pump is engaged, the water level will quickly lower and the float will shut off the pump.

Simple maintenance steps are all it takes to prevent costly problems from developing. After a hard rain or heavy snow melt, take a look at your sump pump. Check the level and pump operation regularly. When purchasing a home, look closely at these areas, or ask you home inspector to focus on these areas in a separate walk through of the home. The cost of an inspection will be well worth the peace of mind in knowing that these components are functioning and installed properly. Using simple observational analysis and visual inspections can be the difference between solving a problem early on, and being faced with extensive, costly repairs.

Welding has been around for centuries, though not in the forms most commonly used today. One of the first welding processes ever used was known as forge welding. Forge welding attempts to join two metals through a process of heating, and then pounding and striking. It s what blacksmiths did. But since then, there have been quite a few advancements in the welding world. With these new methods and techniques, welding has left the confines of industrial settings and can now be done practically anywhere even underwater or in outer space!

As you can guess from the history of welding, the ability to join two or more pieces of metal together in a strong bond has been fundamental in our advancements in all areas of life, from housing to transportation; from manufacturing to repairs. Understanding welding basics can come in handy at work, but it will just as often come in handy around the house, in the workshop or on the farm. Because of this, welding is a skill that almost anyone can benefit from, male or female, young or old.

Why Weld?
If you own any equipment or machinery that is metal, welding will certainly serve as a useful skill. Some typical goals of a welding job include:

Fixing stress cracks
Reinforcing weak joints, and
Cutting/shaping new parts and adapters from raw plating.

For chores like these, many welders rely on a process known as arc welding. Arc welding is a method where during the welding process, an electrical current jumps through an air gap (between a positively charged electrode and a negatively charged steel plate) and produces an enormous amount of heat. This heat is produced at the end of a welding rod, and when it does, metal can be melted. Well, it s a little more complicated than that, but the concept is the same.

Perhaps the most common and economical welding method used today is AC (alternating current) arc welding. You can locate a simple AC welder just about anywhere, such as your local farm store or home improvement center. This welding process is ideal for most of your simple, routine welding jobs. Therefore, AC arc welding is ideal for those of you just starting out.

Minimize Your Risk
While arc welding isn t incredibly complicated, there are a few risks and hazards that you should be aware of:

1. Exposure to radiation
2. Flying sparks (in the form of globs of molten metal)
3. Electric Shock
4. Fumes
5. Damage to your eyes, and
6. Burns

However, by wearing protective clothing and specialized welding helmets and other gear, you can greatly reduce the inherent risks of welding. Here are a few other tips to help keep you safe while arc welding:

Make sure to work on a dry floor. Wear thick rubber shoes and dry leather welding gloves.
Be sure to use insulated electrode holders.
Check to make sure that your equipment is all properly grounded.
Keep your work area properly ventilated to avoid inhaling any potentially toxic fumes.
Be on the look out for flying bits of melted metal.
Most importantly, be aware of any other people who are around you. If they aren t wearing the proper gear, then keep them away from your project.

This will get you started welding safely one of the most important things when learning a new craft.

A quick, inexpensive and easy way to give your doorway some style and attitude as well as a warm and welcoming feel, is by adding a doormat. The doormat s main function is to stop dirt sand and snow from entering your home. There are now a wide selection of doormats to spice up and invite guests in. Any entrance with a colorful doormat, a humorous one, or a chic and trendy design will give you and your guests a welcoming feel. A friendly doormat always makes a good impression. Take your time when deciding which mat is perfect for your home. Aside from its functionality, remember too that a doormat that matches your home can give your doorway a stylish appeal, enhancing the look of your home.

I. Doormat Buying Guide:

i. Consider Color And Style

Doormats come in various styles and shapes; there are humorous ones, ones that go with the season, funky shapes, as well as conservative and bold designs. Look around your home, evaluate it, and then decide which design will be best for your entrance.

ii. Measure your door clearance

Door clearance will guide you in choosing the right thickness of a doormat.

iii. Look at the size of the rug

It must be the right size for the entrance; not too wide or too narrow. It must be just the right size, not very near to a step and does not get in the way of your guests.

iv. Consider Maitenance Options

Choose a rug that requires the least amount of maintenance possible. Several mats have rubber bristles, pulling off dirt from shoes and can be shaken out in the yard or vacuumed easily.

v. Materials

A doormat made of synthetic material is usually preferred by many, since a doormat made of natural materials, such as rope or other fibers, retains moisture and is a good breading ground for mites, molds and fungus. These harmful free particles can then be inadvertently brought into the house.

vi. Safety

Try stepping on the rug, and make sure it doesn t slip, especially if you have toddlers or aged individuals in your home; it can cause slipping accidents. To avoid it, choose a rug with suction cups at the bottom to hold the rug in place.

vii. Resilience

Take into account if your entrance is directly exposed to sun, rain or snow. Do not buy a doormat that can be soaked wet when rain comes; instead choose a rug made of rubber because it has all weather properties and can just be wiped dry. Likewise, choose a plain mat if you have a sunny entry way, as the sun tends to fade colors; an aluminum mat, with colorful designs may be the best choice.

II. Care And Maitenance:

– Rubber and aluminum mats are all weather mats that are stain resistant. A piece of damp cloth can be used to wipe them clean. Occasional cleaning with a metal cleaner can help make your mat look good as new.

– Rubber mats with bristles can be vacuumed or hosed down with water then put in an inclined position to dry.

– Mats that are made from natural materials can be washed with warm soapy water and left in the sun to dry; never use bleach.

III. Mat Types:

i. Personalized Doormats

These are gaining popularity these days. They are available in a wide variety of colors and designs that will suit your fancy. Names and street numbers can be added unto the rug of your choice, as well as they can be monogrammed according to your specific design.

ii. Cast Aluminum

These doormats are very durable, weather proof, stain resistant and the easiest to clean. Aluminum mats come in oval, rectangular and semi-circle shapes and available in hundreds of designs; can be personalized and comes in protective powder coatings of copper, silver, bronze and pewter finishes. Being heavy, it will not move when stepped upon. They will last for years in the outdoors.

Rubber doormats

These are the absolute best doormats. They combine functionality, durability and style. Furthermore, they combat slippage and, it is also available in so many styles and designs. This material is easy to clean and easy to maintain. It can last for months outdoors.

Wooden Doormats

These are extremely simple, elegant and stylish. Unfortunately, they can not withstand exposure to sun and rain, and unless they have bristles in them their ability to scrape dirt and other particles off the bottoms of your shoes is less than desireable.

1. Why Weather Vanes?

People want their yards to look good and ornaments of different sorts that shout their personality and individuality are being bought and decorated on the exterior of their house. These decorations got almost all of the places in the hose covered: the lawn, the porch, the garden, the fences and almost everything that you can see outside your house may be decorated. After much decorating, you might notice that there’s still something missing. Somehow, you’re still missing something. And you know what? You probably forgot o decorate your roof. The popular decoration and personalization of roofs are weather vanes. Weather vanes are those things perched on top of the roof of the house. These weather vanes are useful if you want to know what direction the wind is blowing.

2. They’re Also Functional

Most weather vanes may be seen in airports and other structures where it is crucial to know where the wind is coming from. Now, people make use of weather vanes, not just to tell where the wind is coming from, but for the decoration of their roofs. Since the popularity of outdoor design blossomed, a number of types of weathervanes have been developed over the years. This is good, because now, there are more designs and types that will suit any kind of roof you may have.

3. Price

Consider your options. If you’re buying a weathervane, you should first check out the second hand shops for very cheap vanes. If you’re serious in finding the perfect weathervane for you and you still want to save some cash, I suggest that you surf the net for weather vanes. Usually, the internet has a lot of sites regarding sale of this product and you will have a larger selection to choose from and some of them are even cheaper than those in the stores. It is convenient to shop online because you won’t have to go far and wide just to secure your very own wind vane. The prices vary according to the size, the make and the design of the vane. Prices range from $10 to more than $200.

4. Style

There are so many styles of weathervanes out in the market now. Choose the type that is appropriate for your household.

– Aluminum
– Copper
– Stained glass
– Windcup
– Bronze
– Cottage
– Tabletop
– Extra large

5. Size

Weather vanes come in different sizes. There are weathervanes that are just a few inches tall while some of them are really huge. If your roof is not that high off the ground, then do not purchase a very big weather vane. It will look awkward, perched there and it will just cause eyesores for you and your guests. Now, if your roof is wide, then you should consider buying a wider vane. Make sure you have your ratios set up right. If your roof is tall, get a tall vane; if your roof is wide, get a wide vane. An appropriate ratio for the weathervane to roof height is 1 inch of weathervane for every foot of the house.

6. Design

You should choose appropriately when it comes to design. Take into consideration where you’re going to put it: whether it be a barn or your own home. If you want a classic weathervane design, go for the usually rooster vane. It goes well with any roof, as long as the color is appropriate. There are a lot of other designs like: eagles, fowls, pigs, cows, dogs and other animals that will look good when placed on top of any barn. There are also specialized weathervanes like: firemen, trucks, tractors, houses, barns and whatnot. Always consider what you want, and what will represent your personality more. Also, consider the color of the design whether or not it will clash with your roof or walls.
