Laminate flooring mimics the look of traditional woods while offering easy installation and lasting durability. At first glance, it can be difficult to spot the difference between hardwoods and laminate flooring. What appears to be a natural wood grain pattern is really a thin layer of decor paper (a photographic image) under a tough-as-nails protective film that is glued and pressed to a high-density backing board. Laminate Flooring comes in an array of wood effects as well as stone and ceramic effects.

Laminate floorings main advantages are that it is easy to install, is very hardwearing and relatively inexpensive compared to real hardwood flooring.

Laminate flooring is a floating floor, which means it does not fasten directly to the sub-floor. Instead the planks are clicked together. This enables the floor to be fitted fast and with no real mess.

Most laminate floors today fit together with a click system with the most common being the UNICLIC system as used by Quick-Step. This is extremely easy and fast to fit. The ingenious UNICLIC-system has a special shape of tongue and groove. You simply place the tongue of one plank into the grove of another at an angle and press down. Their sophisticated and very accurate milled shape makes it possible to create a very tight connection during the installation. The floor can be walked on straight away.

If you are laying laminate flooring over a concrete sub-floor then you will fist need to lay down a damp proof membrane (DPM). This is basically a sheet of plastic usually around 5mm which helps protect the Laminate from moisture. On top of this goes the foam underlay this acts as sound absorption and also helps even out minor irregularities in the sub-floor.

Most manufactories now offer a combined DPM and underlay along with several underlay’s that have better sound absorbing qualities
Most of the leading laminate floor manufactories now also have ranges of flooring that also include built in underlay. This underlay is pre-fitted to the bottom of the flooring and is usually of sound absorbing quality. You do not need to install this type of floor a secondary but if you are laying over a concrete sub-floor you still have to lay down a D.P.M. (Damp Proof Membrane) first.

Laminate flooring has been around in Europe for around 15 years and has seen massive growth in the past few years. In 2004 over 750 million square meters of laminate flooring was sold worldwide this was an increase of 13% on the previous year. The biggest growth market is in the US with an impressive growth rate of 25%.

What is laminate Flooring Made From?
Laminate flooring is usually made up of four layers:

1. Overlay (Wear Layer)
The top wear layer is provided by the melamine resin, a highly wear resistant material that makes laminate flooring so hard wearing. This top layer is very similar to the top layer on counter or kitchen work tops but is usually around 40% stronger. This makes the laminate flooring highly resistant to scratches, burns, dent s, stains, etc.

2. DPL (Decorative Paper) or HPL (Decorative Paper + Add High Strength Paper)
It is the decorative paper which gives the laminate flooring its individual appearance, ranging from highly authentic wood reproduction, ceramic or stone designs. An important thing to look out for when purchasing laminate flooring is to understand the difference between DPL and HPL. We will talk about this latter

3. Core layer
This is made up of either high density fibreboard (H.D.F.). or medium density fibreboard (M.D.F.) This is saturated in resins to make it extremely hard. Most manufactures also add a moisture resistant resin to the core. This is important as it helps keep the flooring protected against moisture penetrating the boards.

4. Stabilizing layer
The bottom layer is the stabilizing layer; this is what gives the laminate floor its stability. It is made up of moisture resistant resins

How is Laminate Flooring Produced.

This is where DPL & HPL are different.

In the direct-pressure laminate process the decorative covering layer and stabilizing layer are pressed together onto the core layer.

While the high-pressure laminate process, on the other hand, the decorative paper and overlay are pressed onto special high-strength paper first. Only in a second stage is this so-called high-pressure laminate glued to the core layer. This makes the flooring a lot more tougher and more resistant to dents etc.

How is Laminate Flooring Graded
Apart from the different warrantees that manufactures offer and the difference between DPL & HPL the other thing to look out for when purchasing laminate flooring is industry standard load and traffic categories. These are broken into two different categories and are as follows.

Residential

Class 21 Moderate Loads. Ideal for bedrooms etc.

Class 22 Normal Loads, Ideal for living rooms etc.

Class 23 Heavy Loads. Ideal for anywhere in the house (except bathrooms)

Commercial

Class 31 – Moderate Loads. Hotel Rooms, meeting rooms, etc.

Class 32 Normal Loads. Offices, waiting rooms, etc.

Class 33 Heavy Loads. Large offices, shops, public buildings.

Lifting and peeling paint from epoxy coverings, coatings and seals are too often the end product of efforts to dress up a garage, shop or basement. A lifting and peeling problem is worse than having no finish at all. The eyesore of blisters, peeling, and chipping of a floor gone wrong is testimonial to a failure in preparation. Fortunately, after 40 years of development technology in flooring, one should no longer rely on raw materials like muriatic acid (Hydrochloric) to clean and prep your floor. Applicators now realize that an acid etch using a simple raw muriatic acid is no cure all. Integrated systems for preparing concrete properly can now avoid disasters that leave garages looking worse than before they were coated.

Preparation is everything when applying finishes. You can only expect a surface to stay in place if its substrate is permanent. Obviously, if the substrate crumbles or moves, your surface will move with it. Today, after 40 years of application experience, flooring experts have developed application preparation procedures that help minimize the risk of substrates moving. New floors are especially vulnerable and require extensive preparation. New concrete is dusty for the first few years while the latents of concrete on the surface are kicked, walked, or driven off. Those latents must be removed before quality epoxy topcoats are applied or the topcoats will move with the latents as they break free from the substrate.

Blasting away part of your floor often leaves corn rows cut into the floor due to over lap, and will need to be filed. Blasting often just brings you down to a new level of contamination. It is often better to clean 100% of the surface using chemicals that are designed to work together in an integrated system to assure a clean, solid surface. When you wash your clothing your detergent uses a change in pH to help release soils. Water softeners and rinse agents are blended into laundry detergents, dish shops and even shampoos to assist the pH change in releasing soils and contaminants.

Cleaning first with a high pH or alkaline degreaser attacks oil and grease contaminants while moving the floor pH higher. Next slamming your dirty surface with a low pH acidic cleaner attacks minerals, rust and other particles, makes your pH jump 10 points or better to shock contaminants loose from substrates. The acidic cleaner should have detergents, rinse agents and water softeners blended into it so you know that it is formulated to do the best job possible. It is vitally important to bring your pH back to normal 6.5 or 7 pH after cleaning, with a scrub rinse. Have you ever run your finger across your car after pressure washing only to find it still has a thin layer of road film on it? Surface tension holds even high pressure from penetrating many films. You need to break the surface tension with contact during all three steps of cleaning. The more aggressive the contact the better for removing concrete latents, small particles of concrete that are ready to break of to become that endless dust coming off unquoted concrete floors.

Rotary scrubbers, similar to what a school custodian utilizes, can be fitted with stiff bristle brushes using carbide chips imbedded in flexible nylon bristles to scrub your floor. The bristles dive into mall pours, cracks, and holes to help strip away fragile cement particles that are softer than the exposed carbide chips. These scrubbers should be used for your alkaline cleaning, your acidic cleaning, and for your final rinse cleaning. Scrub rinsing stops the chemical action of your cleaners and provides a liquid medium to bring your floor pH back to neutral and flush contaminants and residual detergents away. Once dry (1 to 4 hours) you are ready for your coating, paint, epoxy or seal.

Epoxy flooring is weather-resistant, and unharmed by rain, snow, oil, and flooding. This resistance is due to the fact that epoxy coatings, unlike paints, come in two parts. When mixed, a catalyzing process changes these two parts from a liquid to a permanent solid. In contrast, paints are carried in water or solvent bases that evaporate to leave the finish. If you reintroduce one of those carriers to the surface, the paint often is able to re-dissolve back into a liquid state.

Even though painted garage finishes are formulated to resist dissolving into their carriers, under stress they can be susceptible to blistering, peeling, and chipping. But water and most solvents have no effect on sealed epoxy surfaces. Epoxy flooring goes on at the job site and requires no seams, creating a continuous membrane that seals what is above from what is below. These epoxy surfaces have been used in food processing plants for over 50 years now. Mold, mildew and other contaminants cannot penetrate the epoxy membrane, and wash off easily.

One should not rely on retail store clerks to help with a floor that will be used for 10 to 20 years. Factory-direct kits of materials including step-by-step instructions and a 24/7 help line are now available online. With these resources, anyone can put a quality floor down in their garage that will last for decades. Like a car finish, you may get some scratches and marks, but also like a car finish, a little touching up can keep those finishes looking great for decades.

Durall Industrial Flooring offers no-cost, no-obligation quotes for its fully customized kits of materials, including all preparation materials and procedures, for installing industrial quality epoxy or urethane coatings at http://www.concrete-floor-coatings.com. These beautifully sealed and easy-to-maintain floors come in over 20 colors. The floor finish can be gloss, flat, or satin and may be easily accented with decorative chips. Additionally, the floors may be skid-resistant like emery paper, yet still be easy to sweep or squeegee.

Laminate flooring is, basically, a euphemism for fake wood flooring. It is flooring that aims to avoid all the pitfalls of carpet and give the advantages of wood floor, while at the same time avoiding the excessive expense of real wood floors. Laminate flooring is generally made from man-made materials, most often plastic or fibreboard.

That s not to say that laminate flooring doesn t have its upsides, however. Because it s so cheap, it lends itself to do-it-yourself projects, and can be very quick and easy to install if it is fitted with an interlocking click system such as Uniclic. It doesn t need to be stuck down to the floor underneath, which makes it both easy to put in and easy to remove if you ever need to. It won t fade in sunlight like wood will. Good laminate flooring can be very difficult to tell from wood at all, while often being more durable and easier to replace should anything happen to it.

Another advantage of laminate flooring is that you re not just limited to fake wood patterns: you can also get stone, tiles, or bright colours or other interesting patterns you simply have much more choice than you do with wood. The worldwide market for laminate flooring is growing much faster than that of wood, mainly for reasons of cost.

When you choose laminate flooring, it is important to get the right kind of flooring for your room. Living rooms need floors that can take quite a lot of weight, while bathroom floors need to be water-resistant (although even the most water-resistant laminates don t do well if they consistently get wet).

One other downside of laminate flooring is that it tends to make a tell-tale tap-tPDD1 sound when it s walked on, compared to quiet wood floors. You can get underlay that will go some way towards getting rid of this sound, but it s an extra expense and extra trouble to install.

Modern architects often use the flexibility of epoxy flooring to allow spaces to flow together creating expanses of unbroken line. Now the living room and deck patio can appear as a single integrated living space. Exterior gardens and interior upholstery tie together with access walkways provided by colored epoxy flooring. As a result, snow, rain, leaves, and other outdoor changes provide unique variety to the outdoor spaces that can also be enjoyed from the indoor space.

Laminate floors are placed over the sub-floor without actually being attached to it. In other words, laminate flooring simply lies on whatever s underneath it (wood, cement, linoleum, etc.). Laminate floors come in squares or planks, and have a variety of shapes and sizes The planks have a tongue and groove edge which are locked together.

Many laminate floors don t require any glue, making installation much easier with their glueless locking systems. Other laminate floors have glue pre-applied, requiring just a damp sponges to activate the adhesive. Many of the better grade laminate floors have their edges pre-sealed at the factory in order to prevent moisture from attacking the inner core structure.

Prior to installation, a special polyurethane coat is put down, over which the flooring will float. Some higher-priced underlayments reduce sound and restrict moisture penetration. The installation for laminate wood flooring is similar to hardwood, with several rows laid first to square off the room to prevent bowing and cupping of the planks.

The process of glueless laminate floor installation

The laminate flooring most commonly offered by manufacturers are glueless, also referred to as “clic-floors.” The tongue and the groove of this type of flooring is meant to lock firmly in place and not come apart with foot traffic. Always read the manufacturer s installation procedures before you start this will prevent you from making mistakes and wasting time and effort. Also, the subfloor must be flat in order for the planks to lock together.

Tools to install glued laminate flooring

You’ll need various tools to install standard laminate flooring. Again, be sure to follow the manufacturer s installation instructions and use the recommended tools.

Glue most, but not all, laminate floors have a special adhesive to join the planks and help keep moisture out of the core.

Straps these are much more effective at pulling rows of planks together than clamps are. As a rule, you’ll need a set of straps for every four feet of starter rows.

Fillers and sealants — some laminate wood flooring manufacturers offer color coordinated fillers and sealants to cover gaps between planks and prevent moisture from entering the perimeter of the planks.

Tapping block use this to tPDD1 two planks together.

Wedges V-shaped wedges are used to ensure that there’s as little gPDD1 left between the laminate floor and the walls as possible. Again, different manufacturers of laminate floors have their own recommended gPDD1 distance, so to be sure to consult your manufacturer s installation manual.

Pulling bar this bar is used to pull two pieces of together. Great care must be applied in using the bars to avoid chipping the surface of the plank.

When designing your new house you will need to decide what type of garage door will be suitable.

There are various types of garage doors than can be constructed from wood, aluminium, steel, glass and other materials.

The materials can also determine what type of door you will be buying.

There are overhead doors, bi-folding doors and doors that roll back against empty wall space.
Obviously the roll back doors will take up quite a lot of room in the garage where you won’t be able to use the wall space.

If space is limited then an overhead door might be a better alternative.

If you are living in a particularly wet climate, then the overhead door can create problems as the water runs off the door when it rests up against the ceiling of your garage.

A roller door doesn’t create quite so much of a problem as the water is limited to the area of the roll at the entrance of the garage.

Overhead doors generally need to be constructed with lighter weight materials although there are many overhead wooden doors due to the advanced track and roller construction that has been designed in modern doors.

Garage doors can cost a lot of money but they can also make or break the whole visual effect of your finished house so cost alone shouldn’t be the deciding factor when buying your door.

There are several excellent websites on the internet that offer information and price comparisons for garage doors but you will probably need a door professional to give you specialist advice at your property to ensure you make the right decision.

Buying the right garage door can add thousands of dollars to the value of your house.

A Garage door opener is a piece of equipment used for opening and closing garage doors. Most models are remote controlled. Garage door openers are simple but extremely useful devices. So much so, that it s hard to imagine living without them now.

The first garage door opener consisted of a radio transmitter, a receiver and an actuator to open or close the door. In this the receiver would detect a change in the amplitude and would open or close the door. However there was a security concern with these kinds of garage door openers. They could be opened by anybody with a transmitter. Also there were accidental openings of garage doors by neighbors trying to open their doors. The later door openers used a shared frequency to overcome the accidental opening by other users. Using dipswitches a total of 256 combinations were made to prevent interference from other garage door openers. However the security issue was still not overcome.

The present day garage door openers use rolling frequency or hopping code technology. In these the frequency of opening is look ahead type, that means every time the door is opened then the next time the door will be opened by another frequency.

The technology for garage door openers is fairly simple. Three kinds are used, chain drive, screw drive and belt drive. Chain drives are noisy as they use a metallic chain along with a metal trolley. However they are fairly cheap about $130 Screw drives consists of a threaded lead screw. They start at about $150 The newer models consist of plastic lined tracks to reduce the noise and increase the speed of opening. Belt drives are the costliest and the quietest. They begin at about $170

There is a misconception that the lifting is done by the door opener. However the actual lifting is done by the springs. When the door is closed the springs come into tension. When the door is being opened the spring does most of the lifting. There are two types linear expansion springs and torsional springs. Garage door openers are of two types, jackshaft type and trolley type. The jackshaft type occupies less space. The trolley type consists of trolley attached to the door and also to the motor. This occupies space in the ceiling but is more popular because it is safer. In jackshaft type, it is difficult to sense when someone is being crushed under the door. There are two types of motors available, AC and DC. AC is more common but DC has many advantages. It consumes less electricity, the speed is easily controlled and makes less noise.

There are some models which auto reverse incase of obstruction like a pet or a child. The remotes usually operate up to a distance of 150 feet. The remote can be used to switch on the light of the garage also. Most garage door openers come with a keypad, which can be installed outside the garage. This is used to open the garage, if the remote batteries are down or the user has forgotten the remote. Most garage door openers allow emergency release so that the door can be opened manually in case of power failures.

We all know that do it yourself projects can be fun so it s easy to forget that you need to take safety precautions at all times. So, here are some important safety tips to help keep you safe during your next home improvement project when using your Little Giant Ladder.

1. Read all warning labels and instructions before use.

2. Use the right ladder for the right job.

3. Respect gravity. Falling hurts so position your belt buckle between the side rails at all times. Make certain the area at the top and bottom of the ladder are clear of debris.

4. Keep the ladder slip free. Ladders are used for many different projects, so make sure it doesn t have any oil, paint, grease or other hazards on the rungs and feet. And always keep your ladder dry and clean.

5. Lock it in place! To keep the ladder stable and to prevent it from folding, make sure any hinges or joints are securely locked before you step on.

6. Inspect the ladder before use. Before each use inspect the ladder for broken locks or rungs. Check to see if it is damaged or broken in any way.

7. Always face your ladder. To help prevent a falling accident, face the ladder when both ascending and descending. Never climb with your back towards the ladder.

8. Wear rubber soled shoes. When doing electrical work or when working outside, wear shoes with rubber soles to keep you grounded. Rubber soles can help keep a better grip on the ladder.

9. Stay away from the top two rungs. Because you can become very unstable when standing on the top two rungs, staying below the third rung when possible to help you keep your balance.

10. Use your ladder properly at all times. Avoid applying more weight than recommended, deviating from recommended use and make sure it s long enough so you never tie two separate ladders together.

11. Keep your balance. While on the ladder, lean against it and keep your hips between the rails. Always hold onto the ladder with at least one hand.

12. Be sure to stabilize the ladder. When in the extended position, the top of the ladder should be placed firmly against the space you are working on. When working on a roof, be sure the ladder extends at least 3 past the roofline. Place the bottom on a sturdy, even surface and stand on the first rung to check stability before ascending the ladder.

Using these safety tips will help keep you safe as you work on your next home improvement project.
