Carpet used to be the most popular floor covering around, but it s always had it s problems. Dust and dirt get trapped in carpet easily, making it difficult to clean, and likely to start looking bad and aggravating people s allergies over time. It is also difficult to have carpet in nice colours, as light colours are much more prone to being stained by dropped food or drink, necessitating the use of expensive cleaning products that may not even work.

Hardwood flooring solves all these problems. It can be light-coloured while remaining easy to clean, as there is no way for stains or dirt to get attached to it. Wood floors also tend to have interesting natural patterns, which are usually much better than the flowery or swirly-patterned carpets they replace. Also hardwood, as opposed to softwood, will not dent or scratch if heavy objects are dropped or placed on it.

Of course, this doesn t mean that hardwood flooring doesn t have problems of its own. To begin with, it is often expensive, as natural materials must be used instead of synthetic ones. It also tends to take longer to lay, as it must be laid in strips instead of being cut to size and laid all at once as carpet can be. Wood floor can lose its shine over time, making it dull in appearance, yet at the same time stays slippery, making it dangerous to walk on in socks.

For most people, though, the advantages of wood floor over other kinds of flooring outweigh the disadvantages. If you re thinking of getting hardwood flooring, it is usually best to get the highest quality floor you can afford. If you re not convinced of the value you ll be getting for your money, have a walk around in a house that has chePDD1 wood flooring compared to one that has gone to some extra expensive: the worst wood floors are little better than laminate, while the best ones can be truly excellent.

Laminate Flooring is becoming increasingly popular and the question I keep getting asked time and time again How do I measure for Laminate Flooring . Because of the amount of times I get e-mails and phone calls asking this question I thought it would be best to write an article regarding it.

Where do I start?

Right let us start at the beginning. The first thing you need to do is find out how much laminate flooring you are going to need. To do this you will need to measure the width of your room and also the length of your room in feet. Write these figures down then multiply them both together. This will then give you the size of your room in square feet. You will then need to add 10% for wastage.

Example:

Width 5 metresx Length 4 metres = 20sqms + 10% = 22sqm

So you will need 22sqm of flooring.

Now you need to find out how many packs you require. If the laminate flooring you have chosen comes in packs of say 1.5sqm then just divide you room size by this number.

Example

22sqm divided by 1.5sqm = 14.66 packs.

Rounded up to the next pack means you will need 15 packs of flooring.

You will also need to do this for the amount of underlay required.

What else will you need?

If you are laying the laminate flooring over a concrete sub-floor then you will also need to purchase a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM). Most leading brands now have underlay that includes a built in DPM. This is worth purchasing as it saves time and money.

Doorways.

For doorways you will need one of the following transition profiles.

End CPDD1 – This is used in doorways that meet carpet, ceramic or stone tiles. It can also be used to finish off the flooring against things like a sliding glass door.

Reducer – You use this when there is a difference in height between the laminate flooring and the floor covering you are meeting up with like linoleum or vinyl

T Moulding – This is needed in doorways where laminate meets laminate. Or for anytime a hard surface is within 1/8 inch. of being the same height as the laminate, you will can use a T moulding.

Finishing of around the perimeter of the room.

With Laminate Flooring you have to leave an expansion gap, of around 10mm, anywhere the flooring meets a wall. There are two ways of hiding this expansion gap.

One way is to replace your skirting boards, this way the new skirting fits over the expansion gap. This of course adds more cost and time to your project.

The second, cheaper and quicker way is to cover the expansion gPDD1 with beading/Scotia. This fits up against the skirting boards covering the expansion gap. Most brands offer beading that matches the colour of your laminate flooring.

To measure for this simply measure all around the perimeter of you room, where you are going to need beading. You will again need to add 10% for wastage. Once you have this figure you will then need to divide it by the length of the beading, they usually come in lengths of 2.4 metres.

You will also need to purchase a fitting kit. This usually comprises of a tapping block, pull bar and spacers.

Check List.

Ok now we know how to measure for laminate flooring here is a measurement check list you can print out to make it easier for you.

Flooring Required.

Width ____metres x Length ____metres= ______sqm + 10% = _____sqm (A)

Divide (A) by pack size = _____ packs required.

Divide (A) by Underlay roll size = _____ Rolls of underlay required.

How many doorways

End Caps ____ Reducer____ T Moulding____

Beading

Perimeter _____metres + 10% = _____metres

Divided by beading length = ____ lengths beading required

If you are thinking of purchasing a down comforter to keep you toasty warm this winter, there are a few things you need to know before you make your purchase.

First of all, if you re confused about what a down comforter is, let me explain. The down filling in a down comforter is the feathers from geese or ducks. Down is a highly desirable stuffing for a comforter because it is very light, holds in body heat while also allowing moisture to escape, and is very soft.

If you are allergic to goose or duck feathers, you may still be able to own a down comforter. Look for a comforter that has down that has been purified, ideally purified several times. The purification process removes the dust and dirt from the down which is what typically bothers most allergy sufferers. But if real down isn t for you, there are some very good synthetic comforters on the market that do a fairly good job of mimicking the fluffiness and softness of a down comforter.

Fill power is a term you need to become familiar with if you are purchasing a down comforter. Fill power directly relates to the amount of warmth you will get from a down comforter and is also an indicator of the quality of the down.

One ounce of down with a fill power of 650 means this: one ounce of that down takes up 650 cubic inches. A down comforter with a fill power of 350 means that once ounce of that down takes up 350 cubic inches. The higher the fill power, the higher the quality of the down and the more warmth it provides. Also, the higher the fill power the more warmth you get with less weight. So higher fill power means more warmth, and more fluffiness while also having a comforter that is lightweight.

You don t necessarily need a high fill power though. It depends on how much warmth you want. If you live in a cold area a high fill power comforter is nice to have in the winter. A lower fill power comforter is nice in the summer or if you live in an area with a warm climate. But I ve found that the 550 down comforter I own is comfortable in both the summer and the winter. And I live in a cooler climate.

You want the down comforter you purchase to having baffling. Baffling holds the down stuffing in place in the comforter and prevents it from shifting around. My first down comforter didn t have fully sealed baffles. The filling shifted and I ended up with a comforter that was thin on one side and extra thick on the other. To find a down a down comforter that won t have filling that shifts look for either baffling where the baffles are sewn through all the way or a comforter that has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles. If a comforter has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles the package will usually clearly state it.

To keep your down comforter clean, cover it with a duvet cover. A duvet cover is like a cocoon for your comforter. Besides keeping your down comforter cleaner longer, a duvet cover offers you color and decorating options.

When looking at duvet covers and some down comforters you may also notice the term thread count being mentioned frequently. Generally speaking, the higher the thread count, the softer and more luxurious the fabric.

Owning a down comforter is a great little luxury. You don t have to buy the most expensive down comforter to get a great quality product either. And if you take care of your comforter it can last for a long time, making it a good investment.

As an interior designer, I get the privilege of working with people in all of the stages of designing and building the home of their dreams. I cannot imagine a better job because I can hardly wait to get out of bed each morning to get to work. I love helping people talk through and make decisions about the big and the small parts of designing and creating the home that is best for them. There are only a couple of things that I insist on in the building process, but having a hardwood floor at least somewhere in the home I will not compromise on.

I believe that adding a hardwood floor or two into your home plans is one of the best things that future home owners can do. Why? Because nothing adds beauty, uniqueness and a level of class like adding a hardwood floor to a home. We have all been in homes that boast lovely hardwood floors, so we all know what it feels like and looks like to add that kind of beauty and elegance to a home.

There are many great ways to add a hardwood floor into the plans of your dream home. Many people choose to put a hardwood floor into their entryway, kitchen and dining room of their home plans. This can be a great idea because it really makes a great first impression to everyone that enters your home. It allows people to see that you really value your living space and that you cared enough to place a hardwood floor where many of your guests would be and where much of your family time would be spent.

Another great place to include a hardwood floor into your house plans is to the master bedroom suite. Nothing adds elegance and class to a master suite like plans for a hardwood floor. We’ve all been in master suites that feel a little bit like a kids room because they are covered with carpet that you’ll find throughout the rest of the home. Perhaps the better choice is to set your master suite apart by having a hardwood floor throughout the room and the bathroom. This way your room feels special and sacred at the end of a long day.

There are so many options for including a hardwood floor into your house plans, I’m not sure where to start or how to end. Just know that a hardwood floor is a great addition to any house plan and that it can be budgeted in to your plans with ease.

For a long time, Americans who are increasingly facing low supplies and high costs have been heading north to purchase their prescription drugs at stores in Canada. The volume of business is expected to be millions of prescriptions filled every year. And during recent elections, many candidates ran on platforms seeking to legalize the practice that many citizens are engaging in whether it is illegal or not.

To combat both the election hopefuls and the United States citizens who are currently ignoring the pricy prescription drugs on American shelves, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America is claiming that many imported drugs are unsafe. There is more evidence to the contrary, however.

Many of the prescription drugs that are available on American pharmacy shelves quite legally, are already manufactured in and shipped from foreign countries. This is counter to the PRMA s assertions that imported drugs are unfit or dangerous. Many industry insiders agree that the association is representing solely the interests of American pharmaceutical companies, who directly benefit from inflated drug prices. Like many other countries, Canada s prescription drugs, like the prescription drugs of every industrialized nation with the exception of the United States, are kept relatively inexpensive due to price controls.

The FDA is in step with the PRMA, although it is similarly vague in assertions that buying prescription drugs in Canada is dangerous. In an interview with Kiplinger s, William Hubbard, the FDA s associate commissioner for policy and learning, stated “We know there are good drugs and bad drugs in Canada, but we can’t tell you which ones are which.”

The fact is, most Canadian prescription drugs are not FDA approved, however Canadian food and drug standards are comparable to those of the United States , and the argument that Canadian prescription drugs are unsafe, remains fairly unsupported. So far, the stream of American buyers seems to indicate the belief that buying prescription drugs from a reputable Canadian drug store is only dangerous to the large American pharmaceutical companies who have a vested interest in keeping drug prices high.

Those who have experience the pain of a water leak in the past know the headache and hassle of trying to clean up the mess, let alone worry about the expensive repairs. Most likely if you were interested in this article you have experienced a water leak. Unfortunately in our society we usually need to experience a disaster before we will take the means to implement prevention measures for such disasters. A water leak is one such disaster that can be prevented, and there are some simple and affordable prevention options.

There are many reasons to protect your home from water damage. Hardwood floors tend to be a major issue if you experience water damage. In most cases the floor will need to be removed and replaced; this is also true for carpet. In some instances water leaks are not covered by home insurance policies, and almost always flood damage is not. However cleaning up a water leak and paying for the bill to restore the damage done is the most heart wrenching issue of a water leak.

There are a few articles out there about different types of water leak prevention options, here is a quick and easy to understand summary of the different options:

1. Simple Leak Detector
* A device that is place in an area of your home where you think water damage could occur, such as the kitchen, bathroom, or washing machine room.
* The device has sensors that will detect water or moisture and sound a loud alarm to notify you of a potential problem.
* The device does not stop the leak, you must do it manually.
* Cost ranges usually from $15-99 per unit.

2. Appliance Specific Leak Detector & Auto-shutoff
* A device that is directly attached to the water supply of a appliance such as a washing machine, fridge, icemaker, water heater, etc.
* The device may sound an alarm when a leak is detected or it may not.
* The device will automatically shut off the water supply to that specific unit. For example if you have a water heater unit and your water heater leaks it will turn off the water supply to the water heater, all other appliances will still work such as your fridge, washing machine, etc.
* Cost usually ranges from $99-$399 per unit.

3. Complete Detection & Auto-shutoff System
* A complete wired or wireless leak detections system for your entire house.
* Water sensors are placed throughout the house in every room or key locations.
* If any sensor detects a leak it will turn off the main water supply to your entire house.
* Some unit may have built in notification systems to page you or contact your home security service provider if you have one.
* Cost usually ranges from $199-$999

Remember all of these options are good and have pros and cons. You can get protection for as little as $20-40 or a complete system up to $999.

Traditionally, wood-burning freestanding stoves were used in ski cabins and lodges, but today thanks to new design concepts they have become a welcome addition to any home.

Wood-burning stoves can be installed in any room of your house, but most often they are placed in living or dining rooms, as well as in patios. While traditional fireplaces generally work as a piece of d cor, free-standing wood-burning stoves are generally used for more practical purposes, namely, for heating and even cooking. Thanks to new designs, your wood-burning stove will look attractive and still remain perfectly functional. Because it isn t attached to the wall, a wood-burning stove will radiate more heat throughout a small or large room.

Most often, wood-burning stoves are usually built of stainless steel, soapstone or ceramics study stone and brick but can remain sleek and contemporary thanks to new materials such as fireproof glass and stainless steel details. The shape of these stoves is most commonly tall and cylindrical, with built-in wood storage under the burning chamber.

When choosing a new wood-burning stove, keep in mind that the size of your wood-burning stove is determined by the size of the space that needs to be heated. The fire of the stove should be substantial enough to please the eye as well as heat the room, but too much fire can literally turn your place into an oven.

When picking a place to put your new stove, avoid traffic areas such as doors. A stove surrounded by windows may be a good solution. The fire chamber door should face the room. Don t forget to take stovepipe requirements into the account, making sure they are in compliance with your local building codes. Since wood-burning stoves are not strictly fireplaces, they don t require any clearance between the fire chamber and surrounding combustible materials, such as wood or fabric.

Conventional wood-burning stoves vary in heat efficiency because their construction can be very different, too. The efficiency of a wood-burning stove depends on how much of its combustion energy turns to heat, which in its turn depends on how well it burns wood. Even the best wood-burning stoves don t burn all wood completely. The smoke is actually composed of unburned wood particles. Another factor that impacts the wood-burning stove s efficiency is how much heat escapes through the chimney.

To improve the efficiency of your wood-burning stove, consider a chimney sweep in the first place. This should be done by a professional fireplace expert. If you noticed that a lot of smoke is produced during the wood burning, you may need to alter the size of your stove opening, or reconfigure the existing fire chamber. If you notice that a lot of hot air escapes through the chimney, you may consider replacing the fire basket the metal rack that supports the burning logs. New designs of fire baskets can greatly improve air circulation and heat efficiency.

Wood burning stoves today offer a great variety of looks and designs to suit any home style, from a retro Victorian house to a steel loft condo. Painted black, brushed steel or even red, with stovepipe to match, wood burning stoves with generous glass doors allow you admire the dancing flames during the cold winter season.

PDD1 How to measure your room for Laminate Flooring.

For the best Patios Dublin company, call Paving Driveways Dublin.

Advice on how to measure you room for laminate flooring, including door trims, beading and underlay. There is also a helpful check list for you to fill out to help you with this

Laminate flooring,

To find the best Patios Dublin company, click here for Paving Driveways Dublin.

Example:

Width 20 ft x Length 20 ft = 400 sf + 10% = 440 sf.

So you will need 440 sf of flooring.

Now you need to find out how many packs you require. If the laminate flooring you have chosen comes in packs of say 19 sf then just divide you room size by this number.

Example

440 sf / 19 sf = 23.15 packs.

Rounded up to the next pack means you will need 24 packs of flooring.

Once you have this figure you will then need to divide it by the length of the beading, they usually come in lengths of 8ft.

You will also need to purchase a fitting kit. This usually comprises of a tapping block, pull bar and spacers.

Check List.

Ok now we know how to measure for laminate flooring here is a measurement check list you can print out to make it easier for you.

PDD1 Hardwood Flooring in the Bathroom

Word Count:
493

For the best Paving Dublin company, call Paving Driveways Dublin.

Now you can extend the warmth and look of hardwood floors to your bathroom. All you need to guarantee hassle free use are just a couple of minor precautions in the bathroom.

bathroom remodeling, remodeling, bathroom, hardwood floor, flooring, wood flooring

To find the best Paving Dublin company, click here for Paving Driveways Dublin.
When building or remodeling a bathroom, people have shied away from using hardwood flooring in those spaces. The mantra that designers and architects have stuck to is wood and water don t mix .

The inevitably humid environment in a bathroom as well as unavoidable spills and splashes have the power to warp wood flooring, rendering it unattractive and encouraging the growth of potentially destructive and dangerous molds.

However, new finishes for hardwood flooring and creative designs are making wood floors in bathrooms a viable option.

To start with, you have to choose an appropriate wood to use. Choose a hardwood floor rather than a softwood floor, as softwood tends to absorb ambient moisture more, making it more vulnerable to damage. Particularly resilient and strong woods that could work in the bathroom are oak, maple, cherry, ash, walnut and hickory.

Polyurethane finishes on the hardwood floors make the floors resistant to most average bathroom conditions and should work in all but the most unceasingly humid and wet conditions. This finish uses synthetic resin, plasticizers and other film-forming elements to form a watertight seal that remains intact, sans peeling, when the wood expands and contracts.

Even with this finish, certain precautions need to be taken in the bathroom. For example, significant and even small spills should be cleaned up quickly. Leaks from the tub and toilet need to be addressed immediately, something that should be handled regardless of the flooring you choose but particularly important with wood floors.

Other minor additions in your bath could add protection for your hardwood floor and make maintenance easier for you. For example, placing mats with rubber bottoms around the wet areas, like the toilet and the tub or shower, will give a permanent moisture absorber that will save you the trouble of running around paranoid and wiping up every tiny splash. Another similar solution is installing a strip of stone or ceramic flooring around the wet areas and hardwood in the rest of the space. This will provide you with a completely water resistant area in vulnerable part of the bath while adding to the overall design of the bathroom and still giving you the warmth and comfort of hardwood flooring.

Hardwood floors give a space warmth and style that is unmatched by any other material. The physical warmth that the floors provide is also an attractive feature, especially on winter mornings when the cold ceramic tiles make getting up that much harder.

Their unequaled versatility, style and adaptability have made them a prime material for every other room in the home and now new finishes are making them a realistic choice for bathrooms as well.

If you re not convinced, however, or are unwilling to take on the minor maintenance issues that come with hardwood floors in the bathroom maybe you should consider ceramic tiles made to look like wood. You will still get the warm look of hardwood without even the potential for water related issues.
