I discovered, however, just how great using leather furniture can be in a home after I helped a client place leather furniture in their cabin.

I’m not sure why I was so against using leather furniture in homes. I think I remember my mother, also and interior designer, telling me that leather furniture was not meant to be in homes. She would allow her clients to place leather furniture in medical or law offices. So I guess I came by my distaste for leather furniture honestly. I think the fact that I have been an interior designer for nearly twenty years and that I have yet to put leather furniture into a home has also helped grow the feeling I have that homes can be done and done beautifully without leather.

My turnaround came a few months ago when a client hired me on to decorate a cabin they had just purchased for a summer home. They suggested leather furniture early on in our meetings and each time I would shake my head kindly and attempt to change the subject. They finally confronted the issue as I was bringing out photographs and samples of the kinds of furniture I saw for their cabin. They asked me why I didn’t encourage people to use leather furniture and I realized for the first time that I didn’t have a great answer for them.

After a few hours of looking at samples of leather furniture online I became slowly convinced that maybe it was a good option for this particular project. So I broke my twenty year pattern and helped my clients place the right kinds of leather furniture at different places throughout their cabin. The project turned out amazingly well and I even began to reconsider the plans I had made for my own lakehouse.

I have since become so fond of using leather furniture in some projects that I have led clients to that option at least five or six times. I have even purchased two pieces of great leather furniture for my own lakehouse. I’m forever glad that I finally discovered leather furniture.

Because electric fireplaces and stoves run on electricity, it is easy to be able to control the amount of heat they give off for warming the room or cooking your dinner. All you need to do is just turn the settings up or down according to your needs.

Up until about the 16th Century, time keeping was approximate at best. There were the beginnings of mechanical clocks that would sit in the homes of the wealthy or in the towers of churches, but they would start to slow in their time keeping — up to one-half hour per day — as the mechanical mechanisms would slowly wind down. It was at about this time that a young Galileo observed that the chandeliers of the church would sway in perfect rhythm moving from one spot to another quite methodically.

Galileo s observations led him to start measuring the sway of the chandeliers against his own pulse. When he did this he saw that movement was consistent. He also observed that the relative timing remained the same even if the sway was large or small. Thus we have what many consider as being the first observations that a pendulum clock could accurately keep time.

It was discovered that there were variances in the timekeeping based on the pattern of the swinging, if not its distance. The swaying pendulum was then fashioned so that it could keep a swinging pattern with a curve that is called a cycloid.

In 1656 the first truly accurate pendulum clock was created by a Dutch astronomer, Christian Huygens. His clock used shorter pendulums that moved several times per second. Less than two decades later, William Clement, an English clockmaker, discovered that longer pendulums with weights took a full second to move back and forth and could measure that full unit of time more accurately.

Clock maker, George Graham was able to improve the pendulum s accuracy in the early 1700s by controlling the pendulum length that was constantly fluctuating with temperature changes. He did this by enclosing the mechanism in a wooden box.
From there, the pendulum clock grew increasingly accurate. This was perfected at the beginning of the 20th century with the addition of the perfect amount of weight.

Up until this point, most clocks only had an hour hand. Chimes would sound on the quarter hour, but with the loss of so much time in a day, it was hard to measure the true time with this method. Clement s pendulum clock, which came to be known as the Grandfather Clock, now had minute hands added that would move one spot after 60 complete swings of the pendulum. Now with the accuracy improved, most astronomical observatories of the day recognized the pendulum clock as the standard by which time would be measured.

Knowing gravity s role in pulling the weighted pendulum and the rotation of the earth, scientists understood how the Foucault pendulum worked. This is a single weight at a specific length that swings in the cycloid pattern and appears to move around a large circle marked on the floor. Many science museums demonstrate the Foucault pendulum by having it knock over pegs with each hour that passes. Although it seems to be moving around the circle in order to reach each peg at the appointed hour, in reality it is the earth beneath it that is rotating to mark off the hours while the pendulum remains in its fixed pattern.

Grandfather and pendulums are still recognized as accurate ways of keeping time so long as the pendulums are properly weighted and climate can be controlled to keep the length consistent. Not only are they good at keeping time but pendulum clocks remain a decorative addition to many homes blending a timeless beauty with precision timekeeping.

Fear, along with death, can probably be listed as being among the chief equalizers of humanity. Everybody dies and everybody is afraid of something, after all. Fear keeps people from doing stupid things and can often be a very good way to keep someone from stepping out of line. However, letting an irrational case of fear and anxiety evolve into a full-blown phobia is far from being sound for one’s mental health. While it can take more than simply giving into the fear to damage someone’s psychological well-being, the fact that certain phobias are more common than others has often been seen as being highly subjective.

The trouble with these common and irrational fears comes full circle with the fact that some people might fail to even acknowledge that they have a phobia, for the simple reason that they’re unaware that the phobia even exists. However, as stated, there are some common phobias out there and it would serve people well to be aware of them. While they are not truly damaging to a person’s mental health, it can still have drastic effects on a person’s lifestyle and interpersonal relationships.

The most common (and arguably the most most stereotyped) of phobias would be claustrophobia. This mental health condition is basically the fear of tight, enclosed spaces. In some cases, people can develop claustrophobia after serving time in prison, where the already-small cells are made smaller by the intimidating nature of the areas surrounding it. Some people theorize that egrophobia is becoming increasingly common as well. Egrophobias is literally defined as the fear of work, but it comes down to more than that. This can include not only the office structures such as desks and computers, but also more subtle reminders like being part of a team or being required to meet a specific quota. It should be noted that there is no definite proof that egrophobia is spreading, but there are probably more than a few people who would insist that they are developing it.

Phobias related to sex, sexual identity, and sexual health are also starting to become more prominent. Homophobia is, in theory, fairly common, but with varying degrees of intensity. It is believed that, to some extent, everyone that isn’t homosexual has some level of homophobia, though it is the behavior of the more extreme cases that is often shown. Androphobia and gynophobia, the fear of men and women, respectively, are also starting to become more noticeable in contemporary society. These two irrational fears produce similar effects on someone’s mental health, such as an astute case of fear and anxiety when presented with the prospect of achieving emotional or physical intimacy with someone of the appropriate gender.

An STC rating depicts how much sound decibels the sound proofing material wiRL block or absorb. An example: a normal waRL has an STC rating of 20 or 25. This means you can hear normal speech through the wall. If you want the normal speech to only be heard as a murmur, you wiRL need a waRL with an STC rating of at least 42.

Now that you understand the STC rating of sound proofing materials, you can learn what means of sound proofing are available to you. A rather inexpensive method of soundproofing is to use foam sound proofing materials. The foam can fit in almost any space and can be either 1/2 inch to 2 inches thick. The STC rating of the foam is between 40 and 50. Another mean is to use vinyl sound proofing materials. Vinyl materials have an STC rating of 42 to 55. For floors (such as in the case of multi leveled buildings) you can utilize sound blocking carpet underlays that fit in between the floor levels. Carpet underlays have an STC rating of 29 to 40. Inexpensive metal waRL channels are also available. These attach directly in your walls and ceilings. The STC rating for these is 38 to 50.
