Not like the ones belonging to your grandmother, the new styles of electric blanket have really changed to enhance your sleeping comfort. New electric blankets now come with heat sensors that turn the blanket on and off to keep a desired temperature in the bed while you sleep. No longer just a matter of setting the temperature and plugging it in, these blankets are designed to keep your sleep as comfortable and cozy as possible.

Timers and warm-up options are available on many models that will actually pre-heat the bed for you based on the time that you indicate they should begin warming. Gone are the days that you have to get into an icy bed, rather you will be able to slip between warm and cozy sheets.

In the past electric blankets have been on constantly, and may have given concern as to the amount of energy they were using. The new models now cycle on and off, and therefore are much less costly to operate and more energy efficient. Several reports indicate that an electric blanket may, in fact, save money on energy bills overall since the overall air temperature can be kept lower while you sleep. If you are concerned about the wired control setting, consider going wireless with a remote temperature control blanket. The small controlled unit can be kept in easy reach to simply adjust temperatures up or down as needed. Many of these blankets also offer automatic temperature adjustment as well.

For watching TV or reading an electric throw is a terrific option. Smaller than a full sized electric blanket they still offer all the features of a full sized blanket, including an automatic shut off and multiple temperature settings.

There is also a new micro-fleece low voltage electric blanket on the market that is ideal for keeping warm without any bulk. This ultra thin electric blanket comes with a converter that changes the standard 120V power into an ultra safe 25 volts. The blanket itself never becomes hot to the touch; rather it provides a consistent warmth. The micro-fleece works to distribute the heat evenly so there are no cold or hot spots on the blanket.

Modern electric blankets are both safe and energy efficient. It is important to keep the blankets in good repair, and to follow manufactures care information. The automatic shut offs and multiple temperature setting prevents the old problems of overheating with electric blankets. All types of fabrics and colors are used to make electric blankets, so finding a match for your bedroom or home is not difficult. Try treating yourself to an electric blanket for a warm and comfortable sleep.

Advantages of Outdoor Lighting: There always comes a time when you want to enjoy the backyard without having to learn every light in the

house on to cast glimmers on the grass. Of course, you do not just want to sit in the dark (actually seeing who you are speaking with is

always helpful). So you need to purchase some outdoor lighting. There are multiple fixtures in multiple styles to offer you the ultimate

illumination for your yard. Is outdoor lighting just for those few nights you decide to enjoy the outdoors? No, there are actually some very

practical uses for it.

One: being able to see everything. Whether you are stepping out for a casual stroll around the yard, or are just peeking through the windows

to check on a noise, you should always been able to see what is around you. Accidents or trouble can happen, even in your own yard. That

noise may have been from a potential burglar, or that stroll can turn awful when you mistakenly step on your child’s toy and trip. You need

outdoor lighting to make your yard a safer place.

Two: stay out late. Why should an evening party end before the evening does? Why should you have to pack up everything at dusk? With outdoor

lighting, you can stay out as long as you want, enjoying the night. Outdoor lighting can cast the perfect glow on that evening barbecue or

casual family gathering.

Three: protection. Thieves are less likely to approach a home that is well-lit. This includes, of course, the backyard. Why just leave a few
lights on in the house when you can keep them from entering the yard? Or, with motion sensors, alert yourself to any changes. The light pops

on and you know someone is snooping around. This adds a higher level of security to any home.

Four: looks. If you are trying to add some extra ‘oomph’ to your yard, then consider purchasing outdoor lighting. Not only is it a practical

way to keep your backyard lit, but it also adds extra appeal. You should not just rely on the grass to make your home presentable. Add some

extra flair with different forms of outdoor lighting. They make excellent accessories and can be placed just about anywhere to create a

stunning new look for your yard and your home.

Outdoor lighting is the rare product that is both practical and fashionable; few things actually combine style and substance, but outdoor

lighting does, allowing you to create a beautiful yard that is also safe. Outdoor lighting provides the right function with the right

look–you could not ask for more. And, with the variety of styles, you are sure to find outdoor lighting that matches your personality and

taste, letting you create a backyard that is the ultimate reflection of who you are.

Actually enjoy those evening hours! Purchase outdoor lighting today and see what times you can have in the night, but not in the dark.

Deciding to remodel your kitchen is one of the best investments you can make. The kitchen is where people spend most of their waking hours while at home. It is where they cook, eat, and gather with the family. It is also where they talk and share ideas about the latest trends and fashions. Consequently, it is not surprising that the kitchen would be on the top of the list of home improvement projects. Having an up to date, modern kitchen, allows people not only to function better with new cabinets and appliances, but also enables them to feel that they are indeed living in modern society.

Kitchen remodeling however can be a very messy and disruptive home improvement project. And the length of the disruption can take as long as a month or more, even when well planned out.

To mitigate the disruption of a kitchen renovation project, planning is absolutely essential. The first item to consider is whether you will do it yourself, or hire a general contractor. Regardless of what route, a homeowner needs to first sketch out some kitchen remodeling ideas to ensure the kitchen design and costs will meet their targeted functional requirements and budget. If a general contractor is to be hired these initial sketches will be helpful in communicating your kitchen remodeling plans and ideas.

During the planning phase, the homeowner should identify the main objectives of the future kitchen. They should research the latest products on the market including: cabinets, countertops, appliances, and flooring. If the kitchen is more than 5 years old, there are a lot of new products to choose from. For example, Silestone is quickly surpassing Granite and Corian, as the premier countertop surface as it is extremely hard, elegant in appearance, and comes in many colors. For cabinets, the trend appears to be towards lighter colors as they help the appearance of lightening and enlarging a room. In regards to appliances, the Stainless Steel look appears to be in. And for flooring, vinyl or wood is the trend. Tile looks nice, however, it can be unforgiving in a room where things tend to get dropped. In addition, if there is no radiant heating planned for the floor, tile has the tendency to feel cold on the feet.

It is also important to consider any structural changes to the existing kitchen area. Is a new kitchen island desired, or will walls or doorways need to be moved or installed?

When developing your kitchen remodeling plan, it is important to note that professional kitchen designers like to think of a triangle when starting a new kitchen design. The three points of the triangle include the Sink, Refrigerator, and Stove. Make sure your sketches consider this, as it will ensure a good functional kitchen. Also, consider adequate walking areas and space for an eating area, such as a table or center island, with applicable space included for chairs. I would suggest that the walking areas be wide enough for two people to walk through at the same time.

The sketches should also include dimensions, as these will be needed when meeting with the general contractor or kitchen designer. Finally, consider where the existing outlets and power for the stove are, and assess if additional outlets will be needed or old outlets relocated.

For more help on remodeling your kitchen, see HomeAdditionPlus.com s Kitchen Remodeling Bid Sheet. The Kitchen Remodeling Bid Sheet will help ensure that your kitchen remodeling project goes smoothly and you get the finished kitchen you are looking for. In addition, it will help to ensure that your remodeled kitchen will be accomplished on time and on budget.

With winter finally behind us, you ve probably started to prepare for the warmer weather ahead. That means putting away the snow blower and snow shovels and getting out the lawnmower, rakes, garden tools and patio set. You may have noticed that many of your stored items, look at little worse for the wear they re covered in spider webs, dirt and rust. While it s no secret that you can clean off the dirt and spider webs with a little water and elbow grease, you may be unaware of your options when it comes to fixing the rust.

Most of the rust you encounter can be fixed with a little help. Not only will the item look better when you re done, but it will usually perform better and last longer.

Before you get to work, it s helpful to understand what rust is and why it occurs? Rust is the common term for corroded steel or iron. The reddish oxide is caused by exposed metal coming into contact with oxygen and moisture.

Since moisture in the air is one of the most common causes of rust, decreasing the humidity around your stored items can reduce the likelihood of rust forming. If you usually keep your stored items in the basement or garage, moving them into a climate-controlled part of your house can help. A dehumidifier can also help reduce humidity, but they can be expensive to purchase and operate. Since running a humidifier or moving the stored items is not always practical, you may need to explore other methods.

For smaller items that can be stored in cabinets, drawers or tool boxes, you can invest in moisture control products, like the Tool Buddy Moisture Eliminator. Each packet reduces moisture in an area between seven and ten cubic feet. Sold in a five packet box, the Tool Buddy is an inexpensive and convenient way to prevent rust from forming.

The most important thing to know when it comes to rust, is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Spend a little more time when it comes time to storing your items, and you won t uncover the ugly rust spots when you take the items out again.

For those items that can t be stored in a less humid environment, we recommend applying a rust prevention product before storage. First clean your item to remove salt, dirt, grass clippings, etc. Then thoroughly dry the item. Next apply a protective coating to any unpainted surface. There are many different options available. We recommend either Boeshield T-9, a convenient aerosol spray or Bull Frog Rust Blocker which is non-flammable, non-toxic, non-polluting and biodegradable.

For those items that have already suffered from rust damage, we recommend a rust remover or converter product. There are several types of rust removal products available. Evapo-Rust is a safe and easy-to use on items that can be soaked. Bull Frog Rust Remover is an organic, non-toxic gel that also protects the product against future rust formation. It works particularly well in household applications as it does not contain any harsh chemicals or emit strong odors.

And lastly for those items where it is not practical to remove the rust, you can use a rust converter product to turn rust into a black protective surface than can then be painted over. Rust Converter works particularly well on lawnmower beds, snow blowers and vehicles.

ARK How to Use Concrete in a Traditional Kitchen

Concrete’s use in kitchens and bathrooms may still be considered relatively “modern” design-wise by some homeowners. But while concrete can be used to create a modern or minimal look, it’s also perfectly adaptable to a more traditional setting – where it was so extensively used in the first place. Concrete’s use in kitchens and bathrooms may still be considered relatively “modern” design-wise by some homeowners. But while concrete can be used to create a modern or minimal look, it’s also perfectly adaptable to a more traditional setting – where it was so extensively used in the first place.

Concrete can act as a substitute for more traditional materials. Rather than just using concrete to explicitly re-create something from the past, you can also combine it with other elements to suggest a timeless quality. In my work, I always strive to strike a balance between innovation and emotion, between spare contemporary and warm traditional. Adding mosaic tile along the front edge of a concrete surface, inlaying bits of tile along a backsplash, or even embedding a fossil in a countertop all connect us to the past.

A California cottage we recently renovated moved from “traditional” to “transitional.” A large concrete curved wall and counter boldly separates the living room from the kitchen. Meanwhile, a stainless steel integral sink countertop straddles one wall- yet, by inlaying glass tiles into the backsplash and inserting a traditional plate holder in the cabinetry, enough balance is achieved to avoid a conflict of styles.

Let’s take a turn-of-century “Craftsman” style kitchen for a hypothetical example. The cabinets would most likely be frame-and-panel with flush inlay doorframes. There would be wood wainscoting in the dining area and perhaps tile around a single porcelain sink. The lighting fixtures might have beveled glass or echoes of Tiffany lamps. What concrete application would be appropriate in this situation? I would look into one or more of the following ideas in combination:

– Choose an earth tone color or natural gray. No bright colors.

– Keep the front face, or thickness, of the countertop at a minimum of 2-1/2″ up to 5″.

– Inset “panels” into the front face of the countertop to reflect the cabinet doors. These panels would be no deeper than 3/8″ and would measure approximately 1/3″ to the height of the front face, or

– Recess the appropriately sized or proportioned ceramic tiles with some embossing on them into the face of the countertop or into a cast backsplash.

Allow the recess to be at least 1/4″ in depth.
– Mosaic tiles in groups of four separated by 1/8″-1/4″ spacing could be placed on the countertop surface as inlaid “trivets” next to the stove burners. (In the mold, they would be placed face down on the bottom of the form.)

– Line the drain board into the sink with tile or marble.

Now I wouldn’t want to use all of the above accents – just enough to carry a complementary flavor to the Craftsman look and feel. The concrete itself is earthy enough to carry that load. It’s up to you as a homeowner or designer to add the touch that personalizes and enhances the piece. In some cases, for instance, the overwrought “traditional English manor” kitchen, usually full of elaborate detailing, can use a touch of restraint – the concrete counter with a simple ogee edge detail and a complementary white porcelain farm sink might just be perfect.

As they say, it’s all in the details.

Ranch owners as well as those building modern log homes have recognized antler lamps for years as the must have lighting to complete their rustic home look. Because of the smooth curves of antler lamps and chandeliers there is a natural beauty inherent in the antlers themselves that compliments perfectly any type of southwestern or western furniture. There is a dynamic with antler lamps that seems to pull every element together and firmly ground the room as a sophisticated rustic space. Antler lamps have a magic about them that seems to add balance and focus.

Antler lamps also compliment many other rustic elements for rustic d cor. In the Northwest or north woods style antlers may be added to snow shoes and complimented with rawhide lamp shades to fashion fabulous wall sconces. The light wood and rawhide lacing of the shoe along with the leather binding and hand stitched shade with its warm glow make a perfect harmony. Weather you prefer to compliment your antler lamp with southwestern light rawhide shades or western style dark rawhide lampshades, the choice is yours and the result will be stunning.

Small antler chandeliers may be made from white tail deer antlers while large chandeliers may have several tiers of huge elk antlers. Weather your space is large or small an antler chandelier will bring the old west home. In Jackson Hole, WY the town square is adorned with antler arches made from Elk antlers that are shed each spring. It is truly unique and you can capture the same spirit in your special area.

ARK Air Purifier – A Brief History

Word Count:

For the best Roof Repairs Kildare company, call Ace Roofing Kildare.

A brief history of air purifiers and how they started from a simple mask created for fire fighters to the HEPA filters of today.

air purifier

To find the best Roof Repairs Kildare company, click here for Ace Roofing Kildare.
Today, air purifiers are all the craze. Every allergy sufferer, asthmatic and health nut in the world has one, but believe it or not, there was a time when we didn’t have air purifiers. We simply breathed the air that was in our homes and somehow managed to survive. So when did this craze actually begin? How did it start?

Types of air purification have actually been around for over 200 years in some form or another, though most people don’t realize it. The truth is, since the early 1800s, scientists have been trying to find ways to make our air cleaner, long before the industrial revolution ever hit and California began to look like an outdoor barbecue on a high flame.

To kick this technology off, in the early 1800s John and Charles Dean developed a mask for fire fighters. This mask allowed them to charge into burning buildings without having to worry about being overcome by smoke fumes from the fire. Around that same time, masks were also made for divers and coal miners who were constantly exposed to dangerous air, but it wasn’t until the 1850s that the first gas mask was developed by John Stenhouse. The mask worked on a charcoal based filter design, very similar to some of the air purifiers today. These original masks worked on the principal of filtering out what they called “enemies” by using a system called High Efficiency Particulate Air or HEPA. Yes, the same HEPA filter systems we can buy today. Once they added charcoal to this system it made a dramatic improvement because the charcoal was able to filter out multiple toxins.

But it wasn’t until World War II when we got some of the greatest advancements in air filter systems. This came with the Manhattan Project. This was a project that got scientists together from all around to work on a breathing device that would protect soldiers from the atomic bomb. While that was actually laughable in itself, it did end up in advancements that helped combat chlorine gas, mustard gas and flame throwers. A few years later a plague in Africa made scientists aware of the need for protection against chemicals, perfumes, building materials, pesticides, dust mites, pollen and food allergens. This started a string of air purification devices being developed.

In spite of all this, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the clean air craze really took off. The concept of a dust free environment was all the rage, practical or not. According to studies, HEPA filters, which were the biggest rage of the era, filtered out 99.7% of all the allergens in the air and all micron offenders of size 0.3 and larger. But advancements didn’t stop there. Newer devices, such as Nebulizers, were able to filter out offenders of size 0.1 and larger and still keep the 99.7% filter level.

Over the years, the number of devices used for filtering the air has grown astronomically. Just do an Internet search on the different types and brands of air purifiers. There are literally hundreds of them.

All this from a simple mask designed for fire fighters. Who would have ever guessed?

Woodworking jigs are a necessary part of any woodworking shop. They are great for repetitive tasks in many wood working projects. They make complex projects easier to manage and faster. You can purchase pre made jigs or make your own. Although they are inexpensive, making your own from scrap wood is even cheaper. Depending on the type of projects you like to do, you will need a variety of different jigs.

Types of Woodworking Jigs

Dovetail jigs are great for making dovetail joints accurately. These can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Another option is to make your own dovetail jig. You can find templates for making your own jigs on the internet or in most stores that sell wood working supplies. Many of these templates allow you to make up to twelve different size jigs.

You may want to puck up a dovetail bit for your router and a dovetail saw. These are great tools if you intend to make your own jigs. Templates allow you to make variable spaced or fixed dovetails for a variety of projects, including cabinets, drawers and small boxes. Some systems come with bits and templates together in one kit. These save money compared to purchasing the components separately.

Dovetail saws are used to cut not only dovetails, but other fine joints for projects. The blades on these saws are thinker than other saws. This allows for greater accuracy. It s important to purchase a good quality tool for making tight joints and professional looking projects. Look for about fourteen to seventeen points per inch in a good quality saw.

A dowel jig is used for making quality, consistent dowels. If you are using a thick timber, get a self centering jig for better accuracy. There are a variety of sizes from a quarter to one half inch. Complete kits are available that include the dowel jig with several hundred dowels in a variety of sizes. Glue is sometimes included in these kits.

A kreg jig is great for cabinet making. Perfectly positioned slides are necessary if the movement in the drawer is to be smooth. Using kreg jigs save time because you won t need to measure and mark the spaces for drawer slides. These make it easier to mount metal drawer slides. They can be used for center, bottom or extension mounted drawers. This is an inexpensive, yet versatile piece of equipment.

Making Woodworking Jigs Yourself

Making your own woodworking jigs saves money in supplies. Use inexpensive materials and scrap pieces of plywood for making your own jig. Since you use the jigs for one project only, you don t want to spend much on materials. If you plan to re use your jigs, use a stronger hardwood to make them.

You can find instructions for making your own jigs in woodworking books or magazines. Instructions are also available on the internet. You can print these out for future reference. Consider getting a good binder to keep your jig making instructions organized in your workshop. Using plastic page covers will protect the instructions from getting dirty, ripped or damaged.

The Hallmark of Performance Anxiety

565

Summary:

Performance anxiety affects even the most seasoned professional speaker or performer. While some people have the ability and presence of mind to remain cool and composed, most of us are geniuses as far as coming up with all the negative thoughts that may happen before and during a performance.

This article deals with
performance anxiety

Not everyone can comfortably speak or perform in front of a lot of people. Some may find it quite a frightening experience that they want to avoid at all costs. Performance anxiety, also known as a stage fright, is characterized by an intense anxiety and paranoia that occurs before, during, and after a performance.
Performance anxiety affects even the most seasoned professional speaker or performer. You can just imagine what goes on inside a person’s head prior and during a job interview, a public speaking engagement, a class or job presentation, a musical performance, or any situation or activity that would put you in front of an audience.
While some people have the ability and presence of mind to remain cool and composed, most of us are geniuses as far as coming up with all the negative thoughts that may happen before and/or during a performance.
This debilitating fear may depend on the context of the performance. A presenter’s level of anxiety may vary with respect to the size and status of the audience, the novelty of the situation, whether it is an individual performance, or as part of the group, the cultural context of the situation, and on the importance of the evaluation. The larger the number of people watching you, the more nervous you may become. A person may be less nervous speaking or performing in front of a group of students than a gathering of important officials. In the same way, during interviews, the interviewee tend to get more nervous with the general manager than the secretary. Speaking in front of a small church congregation you belong may not elicit an intense anxiety as in a business conference presentation.
It is important to distinguish at least three major ways in which people can experience performance anxiety since each may actually require different types of “remedies.”
1monly experienced by most people is an intense, but transient anxious, fluttery sensations, that typically precede a performance, but disappear shortly after the performance begins. Indicates a readiness to perform; and becomes a source of energy that improves the performance.
2.”Reactive anxiety” occurs as a result of insufficient preparation, lack of performance skills or experience on the part of the presenter. Usually best resolved through practice, preparation, and the repeated exposure to the experience of public speaking/performance.
3.The hallmark of performance anxiety is usually associated with signs of physical and emotional discomfort such as sweating, shaking, voice quivering, rapid heart beating, feelings of fear, and panic. These intense sensations come in waves before and during a performance, subsiding, but reappearing again, being appraised as debilitating to the speaker or performer. A common thread that usually runs through these experiences is a fear of negative evaluation by the speaker. What causes the speaker’s anxiety is the belief that he or she is being negatively evaluated.
To help control the anxiety this belief must be altered. Typically this is done by asking the performer to:
Accept the fear
Focus and relate to the audience
Identify and challenge your fearful thoughts
Remember to breathe
Be passionate about your topic/performance and share it with others
Be clear that your talk/performance matters to you
You may discover that fear still remains, but you notice that you can handle it, as you are beginning to get the sense of enjoyment from your performance and from connecting with others.
